find something in poetry

find something you love and let it kill you
not immediately of course
preferably on lay-away
stretch the thing out slow
keep up the fight for sixty or seventy years
but know eventually
it will win
you were going to die either way
find something that you really love
and let it kill you
do it on your terms

find something you love
and let it flay your flesh from bone
find something you love
and let it bleach your hair out white
find something you love
and let it shrivel you away to a pile dust
but find something that you love
for Christ’s sake

in the Ghostbusters movie at the end
they were told to
choose the form of their destroyer
and that’s what I mean
you are going to be destroyed
the laws of entropy have that shit handled
but if you choose something that you love
you’ve got some leeway
it will have to chase you for a while
you can do amazing things
while on the run from death

find something you love
and wrestle it to the ground
it will pin you eventually
but until your arms give out
you’ll really be alive

find something you love
and shout in its face
and hold it like a child
and caress it when you take your breathers
if you’ve chosen the right thing
it will have walked with you since you were born
and it will run with you at the end of it all
and dying will be less sad
it will still be sad
but you will feel like you really went all in
dueling this thing that you love

find something you love
and run with it until the end
in my case
it will be either a woman or my words
one or maybe both
and maybe not in that order
but it’s coming for me either way
might as well choose a destroyer
I like to get sweaty with

find something you love and let it kill you
but make sure its worth it
and get a head start
