One Month Notice in Diary

In my current job, I have to give one month notice to leave, but I'm considering giving them two months because it takes ages to find a replacement. There are usually about 120 people applying for admin jobs here and they have to sift through them, do interviews, pick someone and then that person will probably have to give a month notice before they can start and then there'll be a couple of weeks training them up. So Amy will be running the office on her own for a few weeks which is an absolute nightmare to do. Also, another one of our admin ladies is leaving on 11th July, who they're not replacing so they'll already be one person down. Amy's just booked the first week of September as holiday, which is the exact same week I was planning on starting my new self employed life. So I can almost guarantee they'll ask me to stay for at least that week, and I'll be too weak to say no.

So when should I hand in my notice?? I've already written the letter, it's sitting there waiting to go!

I just got paid today so, instead of putting money into my "Tiding Myself Over For The First Six Months Of Self Employment" pot, which now has enough in it, I can go ahead and buy my new laptop and printer, plus a load of stationery, eeeee! I think I've chosen a printer; they're a lot cheaper than I thought so I'm going to treat myself to a better model (wireless, A3, colour). With regards to laptops, I have absolutely no idea what I'm looking for there. I have a five year old Dell Inspiron at the moment and I've never had a problem with it, so I was thinking about just getting another one of those. I can get an upgraded version of the one I have for £360. As someone who knows nothing about computers, does that seem like a sensible route to take?? I already have £130 in Amazon vouchers to put towards it, earned from taking surveys. Excitimacated!

My sister (Babe in Toyland on here) is also leaving her job to pursue a new career. She lives on the edge of the Lake District and one of the things she's planning is collecting raw wool from freshly shorn sheep, treating, spinning and knitting it into, among other things, dog coats. I think this is a brilliant idea, she could trace it right back to the individual sheep it came from, which I think customers would like. I've suggested to her that I could sell them for her as part of my dog walking business. Sisters doing very different jobs but working together :o)

Friday is the five year anniversary of when me and Jay first met. In four months, this will officially be the longest relationship I've ever been in! At this point with Pete, small cracks were beginning to show which was the start of our demise. Not so with Jay! :o)

I have no idea what to buy him for a gift, he's impossible to buy for. His Amazon wish list is mainly made up of books, so I've bought him one of them, but he always has a big pile of unread books on the shelf so I don't want to get too many. I've also bought him a t-shirt which was on his wish list, but neither of those things are very romantic and I'm a bit stuck. Awkward bugger.

We're going out on Saturday night to see a band, have a nice meal and a few drinks. Date nights are ace, we make sure we have them four times a year; Valentine's Day, our anniversary, my birthday and his birthday. I would recommend all couples make sure they have regular date nights, it helps to keep you close and spend some quality time together.

46 working days remain.

It's a lot different here in the U.S. -- 2 weeks notice is considered the norm, and even that's a courtesy. A lot of people at jobs I've worked at just quit all of a sudden, no notice.

Congrats on making it to 5 years and still going strong! I'd say he's a keeper.

Wow that seems really weird, it doesn't give them much chance to find a replacement. One month is the standard here for permanent full time jobs. Temporary and part time jobs are usually a bit less.

Oh I hope so, I've been pushing for a wedding and babies for some time now, lol.

The rule of thumb, I find, is that you give as much notice as your payment frequency. Thought I'd just butt in there....

Definitely agree with the need for date nights :)

If you hand your notice in you finish when your last working day is and then can't stay on to help :)

Past experience has taught me that no matter how much notice you give, the new person will rarely be recruited in time, hand it in when you want to, don't worry about trying to help work xx

Everyone else is saying the same thing, so I think I'll take your advice thanks! :-)

I'm with Outatime. Not your problem. Just hand your notice in. Our shop is crippled because we're so short staffed, yet, with just over a week to go before I leave, they're yet to interview anyone! Here's to us being all impulsive and independent. We won't answer to The Man! ;)

Everyone else is saying the same thing, so I'll take your advice thanks! Maybe she's hoping you'll change your mind ;-) I'm not being impulsive, I've been planning it for about 18 months, lol! ;-)

I meant we'll be able to be impulsive with decisions and festivals and holidays and mad hair dyes and piercings and weird clothes and...Ok, maybe I'm talking about me... She does want me to change my mind, she's asked me about 50 times, lol! I'm watching this programme called "this old thing" about modifying your clothing. Oh God, I don't need any more inspiration....

Bomb Shell Babe In Toyland ⋅ June 25, 2014

Oh, lol. That would be lovely but I'll have regular clients and will probably end up with fewer holiday days than I do now, haha! However I am looking forward to wearing more stuff that's been languishing in my wardrobe! You do you do, add many strings to your bow :)

I need to learn how to use my sewing machine...

Toshiba makes a great laptop and they last a long time. I am on my second one. My son has my old one that is seven years old and it still rocks. My daughter has two and they are good too. We paid about $399 for ours.

Thanks I'll have a look :-)

Just as everyone else has said, you don't owe them anything. Work your contract, nothing more. Don't forget to take any outstanding holiday's you've accrued as well because you'll most likely lose them if you don't x

Bomb Shell Lucretia ⋅ June 25, 2014

Ahhh no worries there, I've already been working it out and I think I'm only going to have one day annual leave, lol. But I'll definitely make sure I get it!

Miso Honey June 30, 2014

I'd say just give a month. How they replace you is not your concern. I gave extra notice once and it kinda bit me in the arse.

Bomb Shell Miso Honey ⋅ June 30, 2014

Yeah, listening to everyone else's experience with this sort of thing, I think you're probably right.
