This Fleeting Moment in Everyday Ramblings

Yeah, yeah, just another lovely dahlia. I am endlessly fascinated by the colors and shapes, textures and because I take pictures of living flowers, imperfections. This was down at the garden this morning in one particular plot with dahlias and gladiolas. Otherwise, the garden is tomato and zucchini centric right now. My cinnamon basil is coming on and it smells divine. My tomatoes are not quite ready as I am under the giant oak.

I repotted one of my successful homegrown from seed tomatoes early in the week and yesterday there was a squirrel, pigeon, sparrow contretemps out in the patio well (when I was teaching and could not pull away) and it got knocked over. Amazingly, it survived but with half it’s leaves.

Gardening takes a strong heart.

Today I took a bunch of giant chard seedlings that I sowed about three weeks ago that have developed their third and fourth leaves and transplanted them into separate pots. I hope a few of them survive. I grew two plants from seeds in my plot last year that were successful from the same seed packet, so I have high hopes.

Chard is by far my favorite leafy green vegetable, with spinach coming in a close second. My hope is that as I experiment and get better at this, I can give plants away as gifts.

Have I mentioned lately how happy I am not to have a “real” job anymore? I know retirement can be problematic for many folks but not for me. I think for me the trick was to start teaching yoga 6 years before retiring. I love teaching yoga. I love the prep and the doing. Every once in a while, I get a little bored but that is my problem and easily fixed. And the eight classes a week I teach seems to be about perfect.

By Friday, like today, when I hit the weekend and a break for a few days I am ready. Then I get all excited about seeing everybody Monday.

After the technical tribulations last week everything went well this week.

I know it is kind of unusual to say this here as we often write about our challenges and our annoyances, but I noticed this morning that as I was doing the things moving from the garden to teaching to grocery shopping to getting my cardio to puttering with the plants and I realized I was happy.

Even when the world is a hot mess, (or a cold one depending on where you are), it is still possible to feel moments of happiness and ease.

I have earned this.

And not to worry, like everything else, it is transitory.
