author: Alexandre Dumas

The author of The Count of Monte Cristo and the Musketeers books wrote this fascinating book set in the islands of the Indian Ocean. There are various ethnic groups there - Chinese, white (the masters), black (the slaves and some free men), Malays, mulattos. There is friction among the groups. The book deals with romance, fighting, grudges held for a VERY long time. It is exciting to read. This is the only book in which Dumas deals with the race question.
