I forget where I heard this, but most people are quite “okay, whatever” about a lot of issues. This doesn’t make them good or bad people. It’s a general indifference. For example.
Thirty years ago, when you’re told about marriage and it’s always implied it’s (what we call now) heteronormative, most people shrugged and said “Okay, whatever.” And just go along with the status quo.
And now, and in the years to come, with marriage being for all, those same (kinds) of people are likely to say, “Okay, whatever.”
I suppose the next point might be that change only comes from those effected by things. But gosh, I remember the 90’s - and I’m sure Log Cabin Republicans are still a thing. Openly voting against themselves. After all, if women can actively vote against their own interests, so can le homosexuals.
Maybe that’s why issues become polarizing. Not because of the lack of grey, but because of it. Because for a lot of issues, there’s a lot of “eh, whatever” in the middle, and it’s up to a loud voice to jar us into “okay, maybe I’ll stop being neutral”.
No specific issue or point intended. Just food for thought. Like it or not, all of us are apathetic to a lot of things.
