I am employing a little classic pop music to help with expressing my emotions these days…
On Sunday it was the Supremes and their version of Keep Me Hangin’ On, which I actually listened to in various versions by Vanilla Fudge, Reba McIntyre and Kim Wilde. I think someone modern needs to do a new heartfelt version of this song… It is that good… You might have some idea who I am thinking this song pertains to here…
"You Keep Me Hangin' On"
"Set me free, why don't you, babe?
Get out my life, why don't you, babe?
'Cause you don't really love me
You just keep me hangin' on
You don't really need me
But you keep me hangin' on
Why do you keep a-coming around Playing with my heart? Why don't you get out of my life And let me make a new start? Let me get over you The way you've gotten over me, hey
Set me free, why don't you, babe? Let me be, why don't you, babe? (Ooh-ooh-ooh) 'Cause you don't really love me You just keep me hangin' on (Ooh-ooh-ooh) Now you don't really want me You just keep me hangin' on
You say although we broke up You still wanna be just friends But how can we still be friends When seeing you only breaks my heart again? And there ain't nothing I can do about it
Whoa-whoa-whoa Set me free, why don't you, babe? Whoa-whoa-whoa Get out my life, why don't you, babe? (Ooh-ooh-ooh) Set me free, why don't you, babe? Get out my life, why don't you, babe?
You claim you still care for me But your heart and soul needs to be free Now that you've got your freedom You wanna still hold on to me You don't want me for yourself So let me find somebody else, hey
Why don't you be a man about it
And set me free? (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
Now, you don't care a thing about me
You're just using me (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
Go on, get out, get out of my life
And let me sleep at night (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
'Cause you don't really love me
You just keep me hangin' on"
Anyway, I was surprised yesterday when our Director’s admin sent out an email saying that he had a card for her at his desk if we wanted to sign (this is the Director that wrote the horrid letter last year that was the first step in getting me fired, yanked me back in from telecommuting, tried to kill my big project and kept my award for said project secret for two months) it. I had no idea what the card was for and thought maybe she had lost her ailing mother.
Turns out that she and her partner were the lead plaintive in the lawsuit against our state ban on Gay Marriage. When the judge struck it down yesterday the ban was removed immediately and my director was half of the first gay couple to get married in Oregon.
It took talking to Kes yesterday to get to my higher self and truly be happy for her.
They have been together over 30 years. This morning when I sent her congratulations we had a very meaningful interaction about our shared introverted temperaments that was quite touching. She is very happy and I am thrilled for her and all of those who have longed for both acceptance and freedom.
So all morning I have been singing for her…”Going to the Chapel and we’re gonna get married…” They were actually married in the lobby of the public building where the ruling was handed down. But still…
