I've been using Twitter on and off for years, mostly off, but today, in response to our Prime Minster WINKING during a radio interview where a 64 year old woman rang up and said to Tony Abbott that she was a phone-sex worker to make ends meet, I decided to have a little fun with it. I found the photo of him winking, and put it next to a pic of Sarah Palin winking. The idea was it was meant to be a political jab, and it turned out like this... My tweet It got 2 retweets and 2 favourites! That never happens! :P Even one of the Greens senators was saying how much of a creep Tony Abbott was for doing that. It wouldn't have been so bad if it was just the wink, but he SMIRKED as well. His response to the criticism regarding the wink was that he was "just letting the radio host know that he was happy to proceed with the question." When I heard that come from the news-reader's mouth, I literally yelled at the TV, "Ohhhh fuck off!!" LOL! Seriously? This Prime Minister is starting to remind me of that South park episode where everything Stan hears starts to sound like shit, until shit literally comes out of his mouth when he talks. Yep, this is the leader of our country, people!
And that brings me to the next part of this entry.
Phew, here we go.
As most people know, marriage for people of the same sex is STILL illegal in Australia. Somehow. In 2014. Yes. You read correctly. No need to re-read. It's illegal.
...
...
Just some emphasis there to let it sink in how STUPID that is...
....
Enough yet?
Okay. Well anyway, what some people may NOT realise, is that even if a gay Aussie couple goes and gets married overseas (in say The Netherlands, Canada, some US states, New Zealand etc), once that couple enters back into Australia, their marriage is no longer recognised.
crickets chirping
Yep. Our country's laws are SO against allowing a lot of human-beings being happy by denying the right to bridal registry for same-sex grooms and brides, that we have a LAW stating 'Yep, you spent all this money overseas on a lavish wedding and honeymoon, but your Australian passport now makes all that void within these water-borders.'
So, my point is, that there are SOME decent people in political positions TRYING to make a difference. A bill has been put forward this week into a senate inquiry to allow foreign marriages to be recognized in Australia.
It isn't quite same-sex marriage, but it is something.
Anyway, so the public are encouraged to write letters to the senate, explaining their situations - ie. If they are married overseas, if they are a supporter of this etc etc. And since the submissions close soon, I decided to send in one of my own.
I realise I don't have a boyfriend right now, but I'd sure as hell like the option to be allowed to marry should I happen to stumble upon the love of my life, right?
So I thought I'd share what I wrote. I didn't really care if it sounded dumb, as I figured they might not read it anyway, but if they get a lot of interest in this, it can only be a good thing, so I thought 'why not?'
Enjoy.
