author: Karen Essex

This book, set in Europe in the late 16th/early 17th centuries describes in detail the political struggles of the different states - in Italy, France, Germany - all jostling for power. There were marriages of convenience, power was bought and sold, people made and broke contracts based on the way the "wind was blowing".

As seen through the eyes of the Duchess of Mantua, the actions and activities of the men sometimes made very little sense.

But, ah, there WAS Leonardo... and he also sold himself and his abilities to the highest bidder.

It is an enjoyable, interesting read... a look into that time and place.
