I got of the park & ride bus by the museum on River Street, as the bus went on its way to Victoria Square, a Porsche Boxer came down after the bus with top down, the driver was a little heavy on the accelerator; making the engine roar. I never like that if you have a Porsche we know it has power, noise from a Porsche is showing off, drive it quietly keep the power down; let the fans wonder of the cars potential. I have a Porsche and I have control, a cool way to drive a Porsche; I don’t have one but I would drive in a cool way – a different way to show off I suppose ….
In Lemon Quay something was going on, mostly making money at the number of stalls set up, there was a twenties quartet getting us in the mood to swing or spend! I passed through taking a look here and there without moving a coin, I was M&S bound as I was low on crusty loafs and marmalade; my breakfast of chose at the moment. On my way with breakfast’s assured I came face to face with real horsepower ….. a pair of Shire Horse’s!
The number of Shire Horse’s in the UK is getting very low, in 1985 there were 380 and ten years on there were just 295; now they have climbed to over 400. At their size the Shire Horse wound be a very expensive pet!
In Victoria Square I had just missed the park & ride bus, the bus moving off as I ran up to it, worthy of a few of seconds of video – for those who need a laugh. At lest there were seats free so I could take the weight of my feet, it was quiet not many people in the city, even just a few cars passing by, a white van speeded pass trying to pass two youths on trick bikes; they were having fun keeping in-front-all three riding to danger if bikes or van make a mistake! Round the corner and out of sight, thankful not having to see what could have happened; or was it words and doubtful finger signals round the corner!!
Just before my bus arrived it was preceded by a noise, a few stopped and looked this way and that, it was a deep sound that you heard and felt, for a moment my thoughts juggled with earthquake and supersonic jetfighter; then on the corner was a mid-age [crises] rider mounted on a low powerful easy rider type motorbike. The bike was built to impress with its effect on seismometers, and for the looks on faces used to saying ‘I like a bit of fun like the best of them, but …….’ Apart from his sonic surprise he passed by a steady rider in full control of bike and sound!
We have one high-street record shop [to use the old vernacular] in Truro, when I go inside I wonder around finding nothing, today I walked into the music shop in the market, a few steps inside I felt a my resolve not to spend wither, there on my right was a CD ‘Simon & Garfunkel – Live from New York City, 1967’ I’ve got their studio recordings, this was live and when they were in their prime, and here are I with my headphones on, they are singing ‘A most peculiar man’ a song written by Paul Simon when he was touring the UK, a time when Folk Music was on the up here. Their early albums had a number of English folk songs, so I discovered English Folk vie American artistes; and I’m still thankful.
When I was living in Stockport I never went to Widnes, on a wall in the Railway Station there is Plaque, it celebrates Paul Simon writing ‘Homeward Home’ one cold January night in 1964, there have been several plaques; there is a problem with souvenir hunting; Home then was London and the Kathy of legion!
