An Unexpected Jewel (not Cuomo's Daughters) in Everyday Ramblings

Here in the depths of this drought laden summer it is such a pleasure to find a bright unambiguous jewel tone. I didn’t realize until this year that gladiolas are a wildflower in South Africa. Those are smaller and more delicate. This one only lasted in its glory in the harsh heat for a couple of days. It was such a surprise because the strip of land it was in had just finished with this huge vibrant pink and white lilies and underneath propped up on the same support matching white and pink gladiolas. I wonder if this was a rogue bulb that got mixed in…

Today I was able to participate in the teacher’s call. It was a smaller group and most of the folks are yoga teachers in England and France. One of them in London, fully vaccinated, is getting through a breakthrough case of Covid. He was putting on a positive spin, but he has been sick, not fun bad flu sick. He was kind of thinking he might have it, but tested negative, and went out and about for a couple of days.

Then he was worse and tested again two days later and oh yeah, positive. The thing that scared me, a person with heart disease, is that he said it felt like he had a cement block on his chest. I am so glad he shared his experience. He thinks he might have gotten it at the pool. He is a fit guy, mid-forties, I think.

We talked about lots of other things, and I found it very helpful. I was able to express some thoughts about being a teacher to other teachers that I have never found a way to talk about before except to concerned walking companions that while sympathetic, don’t get it. Everybody knew exactly what I meant. This kind of communication makes us all better teachers it seems. We find yogic ways to deal with our frustrations.

Diego was in heaven; he had my lap in place for a whole hour and a half. I don’t ever sit still that long, or rarely.

It is too hot to go out. We have a volunteer peak power flex event this evening for three hours where I think I will read in a cool bath after unplugging everything. I know where the cooling station is. It is not that far and if it gets bad tomorrow, I will go down there to get a couple hours of air conditioning.

But for now, it is time to batten down the hatches and conserve energy so we don’t get to rolling blackouts like so many folks must on this big, exploited world we are still, even with all this, lucky to inhabit.

Tomorrow our state, when has more cases of Covid than anytime during the pandemic, and more hospitalizations starts a new indoor mask mandate for everyone, indefinitely.

Fun times.
