the fix in poetry

you break and
you put yourself back together and
you break and
you put yourself back together again

you break and
you’re never quite the same as the last
you reassemble on the fly from whatever is around at the time
you fill yourself in with the psychological equivalence to baling wire and spit
you break and
you’re a little more changed each time

you break
you put yourself back together
you break
you put yourself back together again

you break and
cobbled together though you are
the places where you’re patched up
are no longer where you were injured
they are the places where you healed
they are not proof you were wounded
they’re proof that you bounced back
smooth and shiny evidence
you broke but
you’re a new and different whole

break and
back together and
break and
back together again

you break and
the places where you broke are
stronger than the places you didn’t
every time more and more you trend
toward solid gold like japanese kintsugi pottery art pieces
veins of glitter where some
might have once seen flaws
you broke, sure
but you’re even more beautiful now

break back
back break
break back
back again

you break and
you’ve become the ship of theseus
are you all pink shiny scars now?
are you all veins of golden glue?
which is you, the reconstitution?
or all the little bits you’ve lost
on your own repair table as you
put yourself together again?
you broke and now you are
yourself completely new

you break and
you put yourself back together and
you break and
you put yourself back together again and
again and again and again and again
this is what our life is
don’t know you know?
the fix is in
