born an incidental heir to the goddess Eris
accidentally dated mostly German and Irish
length of life led to leaving me airless
superstitious and cowardly and dareless
lacking from my birth in self-awareness
falling from above like angels fairest
in and out of love from Troy to Paris
Fortune’s Wheel never quite bankrupt
but often landing on the lose-a-turn
drifting away from godmother chaos
letting that rashness slowly burn
away hour-by-hour and day-by-day
until the measure of mind palace
leans into a reflexive balance
at least more often than not
what half-life hath wrought
working against randomness
working to be less a mess
a wee bit more each day
until I will fade away
while I try to stay
to see what’s next
not taking bets
