The other day I was talking to a friend about disappointments in life. Various topics came up, ranging from college, family relations, music to much more.
I really looked deep to answer this one.
My biggest disappointment in life is that there is no God or Satan in the way that I was taught as a child..and many before me were as well.
She obviously laughed a bit and asked why.
The answer is simple:
Sometimes I just wish there was an all knowing entity that I could go to for answers. That I could beg and promise things to and expect results back. Some all power entity that I could pray to in order to punish those that deserve it. It would make my life much easier.
If all else fails, you could just sell your soul to the devil and hope for the best.
Famine, poverty, corruption, genocide, war, disease, inequality, etc.
With the way the world looks, I am pretty sure that the devil would have no shortage of people lining up to his door with a soul for sale.
Despite seeing myself as an agnostic, I am fairly fascinated by religion.
I guess it should be no surprise considering that some of my favorite authors are highly religious based such as John Milton and Dante Alighieri. I have always been fascinated by the worlds created by both in "Paradise Lost" and "The Divine Comedy."
With all the scientific and philosophical advancements of the last couple of hundred years, it is just hard to look back and take it seriously. However, I find it somewhat magical. I can't picture living in a world in which people really believe that there is a pit of fire below them. A pit of fire full of the sinners of their time and before, the glorious heathen from the golden age of civilization hanging out in purgatory and up above us..angelical creatures flying around near a bearded man.
As much as I love science, I feel like humanity has lost a sense of its wonder with it.
But things are as they are and they will remain as they are.
