Once again, Frederick finds him on the ground with a female who is threatening him. But this is different, much different. Karen is genuinely angry, agitated, and could injure our specimen if he fails to defend himself. She quickly walks towards our fallen comrade, and he has nowhere to run but to scuttle backwards along the floor. Her peers goad her on. “Get him, Karen!” says one. “Pervert!” says another.

From a distance, there is a sound.

Clomp. Clomp. Clomp.

The verbal sparing continues.

Heel-toe. Heel-toe.

A bookbag lands to his left side, and he feels a presence step before him, facing Karen. He recognizes the black boots, the peach fuzz on her calves, the gray shorts. Her straight, long red hair falling down the back of her t-shirt. Her boyish flat chest, and that scowl on her face.

“Back off, bitch, this boy’s mine.”

Karen spits back, “Who the hell are you?”

Her top left lip sneers upward slightly. “I’m your worst nightmare.” In one seamless movement, Tina’s left fist connects with Karen’s face. Karen’s jaw moves to the right faster than her face, and a string of drool flies out of her mouth and on an onlooking student. As Karen crumples the ground, Tina lunges on her, straddles her, and proceeds to pummel her in the face with punches until her face is bloody, bruised, and broken. Tina sits up, looks at her fists, aching from the impact to bone and slathered in blood.

She looks at her blood-stained fists for only a moment. She slyly scans the shocked faces of onlooking students. Gently, Tina shrugs and stands, saying, “Hey. She should have kept her face away from my fists. They’re bound to hit something.”

Decisive action, and a couple witty one-liners. These are the images that flashed through Frederick’s mind when he realized Tina was standing before him. Unfortunately, that’s not exactly what happened. Tina approaches from behind, drops her bookbag next to Frederick, and stands in front of Frederick with her right leg in front of him. She addresses Karen, “Back off, bitch, this boy’s mine.”

Karen sizes Tina up. She has at least two inches and twenty pounds on our little Tina. Tina’s arms look small and scrawny. Karen replies, “He walked into the girl’s locker room and we’re pissed off. Lemme at him!”

Neither move. Tina spits back, “He came out? Guess he didn’t like what he saw.” The crowd hums “Ooooooooh” as Tina wins a point in verbal combat.

Karen’s eyes narrow. “You’d be lucky to be in the girl’s locker room. You look like a boy, and you’re not even wearing a bra!” The crowd is awed again at another witty comeback.

This one stings, and Tina nearly lunges at her, except she’s now held back by Mr. Belder, Frederick’s gym teacher. He asks, “Hey, hey, hey, what is going on here?” His female counterpart restrains Karen and yells at the other girls to calm down. Frederick has since backed off and gotten to his feet. He stands against the wall, shadowed by oncoming students in the hallway behind him.

Karen spits, “This PERVERT wandered into OUR locker room and saw all of us changing!”

To which Mr. Belder says, “At which point he immediately stumbled backwards, and went about his business. Mrs. Adtree?”

His female counterpart is a hefty woman in her forties, large breasts, large stomach, and large glasses. She easily restrains Karen. “Girls, this is completely unacceptable. The boy obviously made a mistake. Now this is your FIRST DAY in this school, and the last thing we want is to start it off on the wrong foot. This foolishness ends NOW, or you’re be dealing with a VERY ANGRY Missus Adtree for the next three years. Is that understood, ladies?”

Karen stops resisting. As the rest of her lackeys nod solemnly, she as well nods, “Yes. ..Alright, Mrs. Adtree.” Tina is silent as they’re both released. Karen shoots Tina and Frederick a dirty look before saying, “Have fun with your boyfriend.”, turning around, and leaving down the hallway. Tina returns her gaze but doesn’t reply. The teachers give an audible sigh and talk to each other.

Tina finally relaxes her shoulders. As her chest comes down to normal size, she feels smaller. She slowly picks up her bookbag and equips it. Shooting Frederick a quick glance, she mutters quietly, “The only thing I hate more than stupid boys are dumb bitches.” She disappears down the hallway before Frederick has time to reply.

The rest of the day is a blur in comparison to said excitement. He ends up going into the wrong classroom for social studies. As he is escorted into the correct classroom and states his name, the teacher mentions that he had his brother and will be expecting “great things” from Frederick. ‘Oh joy. That’s exactly what I need: Someone who wants me to be like that idiot.’

As the day draws to a close, Frederick goes about finding his bus. He identifies the correct bus number and boards it. He picks a seat near the front. Classmates slowly trickle in. He’s looking out the window, but can’t help but notice Tina walk aboard. He avoids staring at her as she looks over available seats. She contemplates choosing an empty seat, but instead quickly sits on the edge of the seat next to Frederick. Her arms are close to her body, clutching her bookbag. Her head is downcast, she’s averting eye contact.

The bus fills and eventually departs the school. He softly looks in her direction. “Tina?”

Her head only slightly moves in his direction. Just slight eye acknowledgement.

He continues, “…Thanks for sticking up for me today.”

She avoids the topic. She thinks back over her day. It started in homeroom. Her face full of confidence (and a bit of scowl), her cape flowing as she walks in. ‘I’m going to own middle school’ she thinks to herself. One boy sitting behind her asks her about the cape. She replies simply, “I like it.”

A boy sitting next to him laughs at her, “Well, we think it looks STUPID.”

She chooses to ignore him. She thinks she looks awesome. That is, until one of them grabs the back of her cape and tugs. She growls, “Quit it, you stupid boys!”

They mock her, “Ooh, stupid boys. What, still think boys have COOTIES?” They pull on her cape harder.

Agitated, she yells, “GIVE ME BACK MY CAPE!” They let go, and with the force generated, she falls forward in her desk and lands on the floor. There’s a chorus of laughter as these strangers find humor in her plight. It is here that she takes off her cape and shoves it in her backpack. She can still hear the boys behind her muttering “loser” and “weirdo”.

It continued in her own gym class. As she changed, she realized she was one of the only girls who wasn’t wearing a bra or training bra. Her boyish chest, exposed for all to see. Out of her view, she heard a girl mutter, “I thought boys weren’t allowed in here…” Another sting to the ego.

But thing is. Her day began when she woke up to discover she’d become a woman. As Kelly, her Older Sister, gives her one of her tampons in the bathroom, she jokes, “Oh, my little Tina, you’re growing up so fast.” A pad, you might ask. Kelly knew Tina had powerleveled into menstruation. She did help her pack a pad or three into the outer pocket of Tina’s backpack

Tina’s face is blank as she looks in the mirror, holding her first tampon “Oh. Joy. Whatever did I do to deserve this blessing of mother nature.” Her day has been full of cramps, teasing, and a deflated ego. And so she says to Frederick simply,

“I’ve had a rough day, I was kind of looking for someone to take it out on.”

She never gives him the response he’s expecting. He replies, “…Well, thanks, anyway. That girl probably would have kicked my ass otherwise.”

Tina’s head turns slightly more towards him, but still doesn’t make eye contact. “I saw her shove you when you walked out of the locker room. She caught you off-guard and didn’t want a fair fight. If she hurt you, I wouldn’t get a fair fight out of you.”

Frederick has to ask, “Why do you keep trying to fight me?”

She looks him in the eyes, “How do you know someone unless you fight them? Your refusal to fight me indicates you.. don’t want to hurt me. I guess that’s important to me.” She smiles slightly and looks away. “I still want to fight you someday.”

The bus continues on its journey, eventually bringing our heroes home. Tina is off the bus before Frederick. She leads him slightly, then gets a small grin on her face. She slows so he’s walking even with him.

“Hey.” She smiles evilly. “You should fight me. Right between our properties. Goal is to pin the other person on their property. Sound good?”

Our specimen thinks. “Well. Sounds better than you beating me up.”

She smacks him on the back. “Oh. I’ll only beat you up. A little.”

“If I agree to this, will you stop asking me to fight you?”

“Maybe…” She lets out a smile. They drop their bags near the tree that’s near the border of their property. Tina takes her stance and puts her fists up. Not knowing what else to do, Frederick does the same.

He asks, “So, when do we…”

He’s taken off-guard as Tina charges him, tackling him to the ground. She tries to grab his wrists, but he resists. He grabs her wrists and is able to flip her over, landing on top. She considers kneeing him in the balls, but she promised a fair fight. Instead, she reaches along his sides and tickles him. This is not a tactic Frederick was anticipating, and he loses strength in his arms. She’s able to easily flip him back over. A little more tickling, and she’s able to pin his wrists above his head.

She’s smiling down at him, her hair falling down from her head. “I win, stupid boy! I’m stronger than you!”

Frederick says back, in disbelief, “No fair, you cheated!”

She smiles and shakes her head. “Nuh uh. You were totally ready, and I didn’t even knee you in the balls this time. You even nearly pinned me for a second there.”

”…Until you totally cheated!”

They’re slightly out of breath. Their eyes meet, if just for a second. They hear a voice calling, “Hey, Freddie. I heard you got beat up in school by a bunch of girls, but I didn’t believe how bad it was. Man, now you’re getting beat up on our own front lawn! Told you middle school is rough. Ha ha!” Kyle laughs to himself as he walks inside.
