the wait in poetry

we can't go back
we can't go forth
but I can't let it go
for whatever that's worth

it all went down
six feet under the dirt
in another life and
on some other earth

it's just a flip of a coin
it's like ships in the night
it's like almost getting plowed
by a tractor passing on the right

it happened and it didn't
at the drop of the hat
a whole life that could've been
deader than Schrodinger's cat

some say time is a river
and there's no return branch
maybe there's second chances
but don't bet the ranch
