The Castles of Fire Tour in The Stuff That's Not Interesting But Is The Most Interesting Stuff I'll Write

A unique opportunity came up on Sunday evening, as I reeled from the fact that a fire hydrant exploded in front of my place and threatened me with flood (I did say I wanted to get rid of most of what I owned, but throwing it all away due to water damage was not quite what I had in mind). While city workers cleaned up the mess, I met my dear old friend Katie for a quick drink in downtown despite the poor air quality.

In case you’ve been living under a rock (or outside of the United States), more than 5 million acres of California have been on fire for the last week or so, and the largest of these fires is directly North of where I live, so I have been living in apocalyptic hell climate for a while now. I went outside at 10am and the sky was orange, it looked like Blade Runner.

But we’re used to it, fire season in California is an actual season that we recognize between summer and autumn.

If you’ve been a reader of mine for any length of time, the title of this entry probably already gave you a hint of what opportunity I got during my time with Katie. A Tour Title means that I’m going on a trip somewhere, and so this time I’m off to San Diego, which means I’ll get to drive through three of the largest wildfires that are still happening in the state.

I’ve been trying to get to San Diego for the last two years to clean-up some loose ends in my love life as well as visit some of my Parisian friends who have been exiled on the West Coast (they aren’t happy being that close to Mexico, which is stupid because after having been there earlier this year, I quite love Mexico).

However, I am not taking any time off work. This is my opportunity to see if my “portable” profession is really portable and will give me a good indicator of how I can keep this ball rolling once the time has finally come to leave the United States.

It should be interesting because every time I’ve visited San Diego has been a rather wild adventure, from Swedish metal bands to Mexican drug lords. I can already tell you this time will bring something different because I have a scheduled meeting at a Naval base and the notorious nude beach.

So here’s hoping I get everything ready because this train is going to roll without me if I don’t get my shit together.
