A tad warm? in A small but passable life.

How many days a year are over 100 degrees here? Please! That is nothing. August 9th the record of 33 days in a year of over 110 degrees was broken. And if I’m still thinking clearly, every day since then it has been over 110 degrees. Which should put us at about 45 days or so. But we did get a storm rolling through last night that left a inch of rain in the rain gauge. That’s the first rain since that half an inch nearly a month ago. I think the monsoon was a bust, just like last year.

And of course, the middle of last week, Mom’s A/C in the trailer went out. And of course, the A/C guys were booked up. He put a portable unit in her living room. I closed her bedroom door at the back of the trailer and told her she’ll have to use the fold-out in the living room. And yes, she refused to go anywhere. I offered a room somewhere, a unit here in the park, or to call one of her friends for a “sleepover”. She didn’t want to be bothered. Whatever. It has been 85 in there when I go in at 8am. And by 8pm when I go in to make up her bed up it has been 95 degrees. But she’s made it. They’ll be here tomorrow to put in the new unit. Oh yeah, the ten year warranty on the old unit had expired in March 2020. The motor that went out would have been $1650 to replace. So I just ordered a new complete unit. $6600 with a ten year warranty. I don’t want to fart around constantly fixing and worrying about the old unit. Mom had the money in the “emergency fund” in the bank, but since we’d zeroed out the credit card last month, I just put the total on the card. She paid off the last $5200 balance in six months.

I finished reading “Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties” by Tom O’Neill. I guess now “Helter Skelter” by Bugliosi needs to be re-shelved in fiction. I knew some of it but not all of it. Bugliosi left Jolly West and Manson’s year in San Francisco out of his book. And Bugliosi’s motive of “Helter Skelter” was completely made up.

That’s enough of a book review. I could add a lot more. That’s why I hate reviewing. Just read the book.

I’ve ordered another non-fiction from the library. A massive tome by Roger Penrose. I watched him on an Eric Weinstein podcast. He has some interesting ideas.

I think I’ve decided on which motorcycle I’m going to buy. I’ve been watching youtube video reviews for several years now. I haven’t been to the dealership to actually look at one, but I’m leaning toward a Honda CB500X. It might be the perfect machine to get up into the mountains and out into the desert. With a MSRP of $6699 it may be the best deal out there.

My thinking is that with a four-wheeled vehicle you have to park it and hike in to tent camp. With a motorcycle you may be able to go past the end of the road, out of sight, to camp. Oh yeah, being able to get 60 to 80 MPG on a five gallon tank would be nice.

Anyway, I’ll sit right here and wait for the next book.
