darkness in poetry

we owe a lot to the darkness
despite how we always degrade it
assign it to negatives
treat it like a hell

we owe a lot to the darkness
we go in the darkness to sleep
we go in the darkness to heal
it’s cold in the darkness and quiet
sometimes you just need to rest
sometimes you just need to not
not see anything
your eyes tired
your skin raw
you just need
to sleep

we owe a lot to the darkness
if the sun shone forever
if there were not
buildings and caves to hide in
our skin would blister and char
we would sleep but never know
when we were supposed to do so
we would never know solace
we would never know
how to truly be alone
in all the ways it is
awful and also necessary
without the darkness

we owe a lot to the darkness
light a candle in its honour
then gently blow it out
see?
there’s one less thing to
hurt our eyes with now
we can maybe allow
ourselves to rest
for a while

for a little while
in the blessing
of darkness
