tomorrow in poetry

senator janitor
banker and nun
we are all mostly just mundane
and ugly and plain
but we all get our flashes
of being fantastic
the trick is
finding the discipline
to get the timing right
to squeeze those drops
straight into the sunlight
and save the shames
and the borings the same
for only in front
of the ones who love us

because
even though we're all
a little bit amazing
the rest is also true
in the movies the hero
almost always faces off
with their dark reflection
in the much-anticipated part two
but in life we do it
every single day
and it's a struggle
without nearly the
silver-screen fanfare
but we get up anyway
the best of us dare
to be our better selves

and brother
I work on it every day
trying to get the timing down
and blast our the shadows
and when I don't get it right
I hope for tomorrow
I'm trying to get to tomorrow

it's how I keep going
despite all the evidence
that I'm only mundane
I hold on for tomorrow
so I don't go insane

and some day?
it's going to work
