with a cause in poetry

in a universe where
decay is written into the
very code of how atoms work
where entropy will always win
the war even if we can hold it
off in the battle now and again

in a species where
we may as well be mayflies
eighty turns around the sun
if we are lucky as hell on
this planet that laughs off
tens of thousand of sunspins
as if blinking its blue eye

with all laws stacked against us
everything programmed for these
short brutal lives fumbling fights
over scraps left by other deaths
Darwinian survival and the stark
fists of greedy invisible hands
the ultimate act of rebellion
is love

not cruelty
not coarseness
not selfishness
not delusion of superiority
not pantomine of toughness
not owning gaudy objects
no

everything is stacked against
sharing in a world of scarcity
forgiving in systems of violence
letting go calendars too short to count
if you really want to really rebel
against the laws of society
against the fundamentals of existence
you gotta love
you gotta love everyone
everything everywhere
even the people who buy into the hate
they’ve been sold thinking it profits them
maybe especially them

the briefness of this dance
our loneliness amoung the stars
let alone in our houses and cars
there is nothing more conformist
than accepting the fear and paranoia
those extant facts force upon you
you really wanna buck the trend
you really want to be different
you gotta choose love
there is nothing harder
in this cold-death cosmos
than love

and there’s also
nothing better
than love
