Seventeen years ago this evening, March 18 1997, I went to my last John Denver concert. I went with my husband and 9 year old son. Nowadays our son insists that we dragged him there kicking and screaming! but actually I originally booked two tickets and then he asked if he could come and I was lucky enough to get a third right in front of the other two.
I was a fan of John Denver right from the first time I saw him on the BBC2 shows in 1973 and went to 7 concerts in all. The first was at The London Palladuim in 1976. I nearly didn't get to that one because, although I rushed straight to the theatre as soon as I had heard, the whole week of concerts was already sold out. The following week was to be our wedding. Then I heard they had added two extra concerts but it was personal booking only and the booking opened on the first day of my honeymoon! Can you imagine my dillema, eventually I did the right thing and put the concert out of my mind and went on my honeymoon then the day we got back I walked past a ticket agent who had a few tickets left. I couldn't believe it, I went straight there and bought them and was an hour and a half late for work.
I took my mother to the next concert and she embarrassed me to hell by singing the yodelling part of Calypso at the top of her voice, that was in 1979, she was 72 at the time and audiences were younger then!
I had planned to go out tonight to a local folk club. I was going to sing one of his songs but I developed a migraine this afternoon and I don't think I feel well enough. So I will stay home and listen to some of his music instead.
