I make websites like I play video games... in Site Updates

I upgrade. And upgrade some more, until my armor is gold-encrusted diamonds, shooting off rainbow beams of fire and ice.
Uhhhh... where was I? Oh yes! Upgrading. I decided to start the rather lengthy process of upgrading the design framework I built Prosebox on, because there's some really cool new stuff. In the process, I thought to myself, "If Prosebox was in fact customizable, and people could customize their pages, what might it look like in the future?" With this in mind i started tweaking a bunch of my design elements, and it's shaping into an entirely new animal.
I give you this teaser image I posted on Facebook:

Ooooh! Pretty! Shiny! And it doesn't get in the way of the WORDS!!! Score, m'lord!
simple mind Deleted user ⋅ September 13, 2013
Yep. :) If people want to obscure their words, Prosebox is the wrong site for them. Reading always gets priority! And if there is no background or it fails to load, it doesn't affect the content at all. Booyah! ;)

Open Diary allows users to COMPLETELY obscure their words in a variety of ways: fluorescent backgrounds, blinking doo-dads, dancing rodents, text that blends mind-numbingly into each page. At Open Diary, WE believe that if a user wants to give other users aneurysms by just trying to read their posts, we back them 100%! AND, Open Diary leads the Internet in content failing to load. ALL for a reasonable subscription rate, for a complete DOG'S DINNER of customization options, AND a guarantee that your content will either load or NOT load. Also, we offer 24-hour access to a notice that our Help Desk is down, when you need assistance. Name one site on the Internet that can offer THAT besides Open Diary!

See that? Who besides Open Diary provides a creator who will come to YOUR website and spam it, free of charge? NOBODY -- that's who!

This is high entertainment here! Hilarious!
Teflon Superhero ⋅ September 13, 2013
How hot and wet do YOU like it, is the real question!!
Whimsy ⋅ September 13, 2013
It's getting there :) Part of why I'm not yet using it is that I can't customize anything and the interface feels clunky. I know it's a work in progress though
Daydream Believer Whimsy ⋅ September 13, 2013
And you beat me to the punch... :)
Daydream Believer ⋅ September 13, 2013
YAY! My best friend was just complaining that she wouldn't use PB other than to read me because of the lack of customization. I just sent her the link with the good news! And yes, not getting in the way of the words is wonderful! Much love Sir!

Open Diary has been offering ITS users a COMPLETE array of customization options since 1998 -- which is the last time most of them have been able to login to their accounts.
Bullwinkle6 The REAL DiaryMaster ⋅ September 14, 2013
That about sums it up, DM!

Ha, HA!!!
Camdengirl ⋅ September 13, 2013
Oh I like... Especially because the box overlays still let you read the text. I've been missing the identity of all the bookmarks, it's sometimes hard to know who you are reading!

Love it!

As long as I can still read the words, I'm happy. Though, I will say this much, I've discussed this with a few people (prior to this) and we all really loved the fact that having Prosebox up at work didn't make us look like we were doing something wrong, while personalized OD pages made it look like were trolling some 14-year-old girl's MySpace page.
I know it's a dilemma for you. The SAHM's all want it to be pretty and personalized. But the ability to have the site up at work and not have people look closer to see what's going on, on our screens, is a big bonus for others of us. I know of a few people who made the switch from OD for that specific reason.
Not trying to be contrary. Just pointing out some intel. I'm sure you have a bunch of people clamoring for page individualization because they aren't clever enough to do that with what they write. But you may also be looking at a bunch of people who are not currently bothering you, who might start if/once you change this.
simple mind hoops ⋅ September 13, 2013
Yeah, I think I have an idea that will make everyone happy. Currently I'm redesigning everything with white panels on top of a very light gray background. Very professional looking, like it could be any standard news site. I could add a setting for logged in users to simply not load backgrounds. Because the panels are independent of backgrounds, swapping those in and out doesn't make anything unreadable; the panels themselves are still black text on white.
Flame is Love simple mind ⋅ September 13, 2013
Perhaps have an account setting that blocks all customization while you're logged in?
simple mind Flame is Love ⋅ September 13, 2013
Yeah, that's what I meant.
hoops simple mind ⋅ September 13, 2013
I wouldn't know about that. I have a strict, Never Make Everyone Happy policy, but in an endeavor like this, that might be a good thing. ;)
simple mind hoops ⋅ September 13, 2013
I suppose I should say I'm trying to make a majority of reasonable people happy. The ones who want Hello Kitty tiles behind their words in a light pink comic sans font will dislike me because I'm never going there.
Lepetit pumpkinesque ⋅ September 13, 2013
Yes, so long as the background remains white for us to read on I am all for it.
simple mind Lepetit pumpkinesque ⋅ September 13, 2013
ABSOLUTELY.
SilverStar46 ⋅ September 13, 2013
You're full of awesomesauce dear sir! This is perfect and I love the idea of being able to turn on or off the customization depending on where we might be viewing the content! :)
Chaosindreams ⋅ September 14, 2013
I like it.
cricket_factor ⋅ September 14, 2013
I can't wait to have this. We get to pick a background or will you provide choices for us?
Deleted user ⋅ September 16, 2013
Thank you so much for the update you've done already !!! It just seems so much easier to navigate all-round !!! ALSO , reposing question (in different words): How can we download our entries? And if not, when do you foresee this option for us?
