Who knows? in A small but passable life.

If I had my druthers about it I would don my backpack, figure out how to drag along a couple of months worth of food and a stack of novels and my lawn chair, and hike out into the desert for a sit-down. I wouldn’t bring any electronics except for my solar lights.

But I can’t. I’ve got to stay here with Mom.

I tried the store again today. It was even emptier than it was a few days ago. No cans, no packages, no bread, no flour, but there were six bags of sugar on the shelf. I took one. I also found a cake mix and a can of frosting. There was milk but I had some here. I figure milk may keep coming.

At the register I found the cashier unusually calm, not rushed like they usually are. She scanned while I bagged then while I paid she came around to finish bagging. We had a nice chat.

I had also had a nice chat with a guy who was dusting empty shelves.

When I came home and told Mom of the adventure and how there weren’t some things I wanted she suggested I try another store. She still doesn’t quite grasp the seriousness of the current situation. Or even how long it may last.

I called the library today and explained that I had a book from the inter-library loan system that was due on the 23rd and that I might not be able to return it and I didn’t want to pay the $1 per day late fee. The gentleman said that the building is closed. All overdue fines are waived until at least May third. And to just drop it in the outside box before then, if possible.

Something else to think about:
