Late last night a surprise call from Ryan on my voice mail. I was out at the symphony concert. He had the opportunity to come spend today with me while Jessica visited in town with a college girlfriend over lunch, coffee and whatever girls do when they get together. Of course I wasn't turning down the chance to spend more time with Ryan, plus he was intending on bringing THE ENGAGEMENT RING which he just picked up from the jeweler last night. Yes, yes, the visit was on. I wasn't missing a moment with my son, or the opportunity to see what I imagined a finished beauty of a ring before he presents it to his prospective bride.
In my excitement I was able to get up a bit early, tidy up a few piles of books I've been trying to read and be certain all was ready for my extra visitor, Jynx, Jessica and Ryan's black lab. It was wonderful to have a dog sniffing her way through the house, nosing in corners and under foot while I was making breakfast for Ryan and me. Though it's was a sunny day out it is still quite cold, but I opened windows to allow some fresh air in. I was just in a happy mood, so much joy taking place right in Ryan's life, my being blessed to be a part of it all, and today the bonus, my son coming to just hang out for the day. I couldn't have been more excited.
Naturally, the first thing of order after getting a great big hug was getting to see (and wear) Jessica's engagement ring. I took a few photos, but good as the pictures are they don't do it justice. Nothing but seeing her wear the ring and the smile on her face will, I'm certain of that. Ryan can't stop grinning from ear to ear. He's so pleased with how the ring turned out. About every fifteen minutes he would take it from the special box he has it tucked away in for safe keeping and examine it with a satisfied smile I've never seen on his face, ever, never in his life. The man is happy I'm telling you.
As his mother I have a joy in this. The knowledge of having been part of creating another generation of heirloom, seeing my deeply stoic son turn to a sentimental mushball, thinking of how very tearfully happy my grandmother would be to witness me handing down her jewels to her great-grandson's wife to be...yes, grandma would be all undone in the best of ways to see this taking place. She was the most sentimental woman I've known in my lifetime and I do believe there turns out to be more than a touch of her in each successive generation of her.
This is one of those life events I never could imagine would turn the way it has nor affect me in such a heart warming way. I just plain feel special, blessed and happy this evening. Motherhood has so many special joys.
The ring.
