Books: a couple of books I found most informative about violence, and recognizing pre-incident indicators of violence:
The Gift of Fear and Other Survival Signals that Protect Us From Violence by Gavin de Becker (Amazon.com link: http://www.amazon.com/Other-Survival-Signals-Protect-Violence/dp/0440508835/ref=la_B001HCVD06_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347917311&sr=1-1)
Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe (and Parents Sane) by Gavin de Becker (Amazon.com link: http://www.amazon.com/Protecting-Gift-Keeping-Children-Teenagers/dp/0440509009/ref=la_B001HCVD06_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1347917311&sr=1-2
Both books may be ordered through your local bookstore, as well.
Gavin de Becker, author of The Gift of Fear and Protecting the Gift as well as numerous other books, has a security and threat-assessment firm, Gavin de Becker and Associates. Check it out at http://gavindebecker.com/.

And for a bit of comic relief about a subject which, for many if not most women, is of deadly consequence, check out Chris Brecheen’s article “Changing the Creepy Guy Narrative” about an incident in which he participated on BART, San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit system. He shied off a creep who was pestering a woman on a nearly-empty train. Take a look:
