Editor, with a twist in Site Updates

All right, let's try out this bad boy!!

You will notice that the entry editor has changed, hopefully for the better. I've seen other sites that do it similarly and I really like it. It's a lot like composing your entry in a Word document or something like that, but you're right here in Prosebox.

The editor doesn't even really look like an editor, and the space grows as you type and hit Enter. The Preview button has been moved back down to the bottom toolbar, where I think it's less easy to miss. The text changes to "Edit" to let you know you can get back to Edit mode by clicking the button again.

The rest of the editor toolbar is temporarily gone until I figure out what to do with it.

I'm noticing that the resize function might be slightly flaky... but here's hoping it works reasonably well.

Not bad!

Hmm...I twisty Editor...this could be interesting! :)

sassafras March 10, 2014

Your disco ball is gone!

simple mind sassafras ⋅ March 10, 2014

Didn't you hear? Apparently disco is dead. Yeah, I was pretty shocked too. Disco is out, and Devo is in.

Pretty Fly Jedi simple mind ⋅ March 10, 2014

Whip it!

•kitkat• Pretty Fly Jedi ⋅ March 11, 2014

Whip it good!

crafty_tori March 10, 2014

Not sure how I feel about it, but I'll give it a shot.

simple mind crafty_tori ⋅ March 10, 2014

You'll eat it and you'll like it!!! (just kidding)

Finn simple mind ⋅ March 11, 2014

That cracked me up so much.

Ophidia simple mind ⋅ March 12, 2014

I love your sense of humor :D It's so great having you for a -- what is it called? Site moderator? Site admin? ProseBOSS?

Rootless Ophidia ⋅ March 18, 2014

ProseBoss!! LOVE IT! :D

LivingWaterCreek March 10, 2014

Looks good. But having the buttons to format fonts, bold, etc, was helpful to me. I still have trouble with markup and html. And I have a lazy streak to re-learn after years of button use. I'm appreciate none the less of whatever you put out there.

simple mind LivingWaterCreek ⋅ March 10, 2014

Pardon my dust, I'll get that part of it back soon.

Leslie Bruce LivingWaterCreek ⋅ March 11, 2014

I liked them too. Especially the insert photo button.

Leanne 🌈 Leslie Bruce ⋅ March 11, 2014

This really sucks not having the other functions handily accessible. If you'd just leave things alone it'd be great. Remember, we wouldn't have joined if we didn't love things just the way they are. Too much change is annoying and causes all kinds of glitches and headaches. Nothing irritates me more than to get hooked on a site just find a year or so later it becomes nothing like what it originally was. So please... if it's isn't broken, don't fix it! You don't need to impress us anymore. We ARE impressed and happy just the way it is.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 11, 2014

The site's BETA.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 11, 2014

How long is a site officially Beta, or is there no set time? Just curious. :)

Cat Mommy Deleted user ⋅ March 11, 2014

There is no set time. It's in BETA until it's not.

One Angry Dwarf Deleted user ⋅ March 11, 2014

I understand frustration with change, but it was the total lack of change that caused OD to fall apart. I, for one, am happy to have an actively engaged site master, even if not every change is perfect. That's what constructive criticism is for, but tbh I think requesting he stop changing things entirely is not helpful in the long-term.

Also: there's loads of stuff that we're not all super jazzed about and WOULD like to change. And it's great to have open conversations about it instead of being abandoned for years and eventually shut down, ya know?

Sapphire March 11, 2014

Hmmm can't say I like it. One of the things that put me off moving here before OD died was the lack of formatting buttons. Yes I know HTML, yes I could probably do markup but I don't want the hassle of having to do either just to make some text bold or italic, or to add an image. So removing those easy to use buttons feels like a step backwards to me. Sorry :(

Deleted user Sapphire ⋅ March 11, 2014

Agree, but he promises to put them back. Let's hope he does so soon!

•kitkat• Sapphire ⋅ March 11, 2014

You can also format italics and bold by using either one * before and after what you want italicized, or using ** before and after what you want to be in bold. That's what I use and it's pretty handy.

banker chick Sapphire ⋅ March 11, 2014

He said in the entry that those would be coming back.

NeonLady March 11, 2014

I love it! Thanks!

Loki March 11, 2014

  • oh! That is what happened! I was posting a whole bunch of food porn, and wondered what had happened =D It is nice and a lot easier to make entries. Thank you. ♥
Cat Mommy March 11, 2014

Shiny! I like that preview now looks how your actual entry will look, before images were squashed and the font was a wee bit smaller. Now it matches! lol

Sorry but what are you referring to here?
"I'm noticing that the resize function might be slightly flaky."
What's the resize function?

=bernard= March 11, 2014

Wasn't sure how this was suppose to work at first, love it. For me it's a keeper. Naturally you've still got some cranky pants who still want to live in the good ol' days of the OD. Whiners have to understand they get their accounts for free, and until they pay for the development you do to the site they don't have a stake in it. THEY JUST GET TO USE IT.

banker chick =bernard= ⋅ March 11, 2014

Or they could just make their own site. Then we wouldn't have to listen to it. lol

wayward spirit March 11, 2014

I'm not sure how I feel about it. The colors I have for Prosebox are dark grey, so the box I'm typing in for editing are also dark grey and there is no distinction between it and the area outside of the editing section. Any way that this can default to white again?

Naked Goblin March 11, 2014

I may be a little thick, but it took me ages to work out how to add a title.

Skikkles911 March 11, 2014

Can I please just write in html? ...please?

simple mind Skikkles911 ⋅ March 11, 2014

You have my permission to write in HTML. HTML is supported (minus the ability to change font sizes and colors since that would wreak havoc with the themes).

Deleted user March 11, 2014

Is there a site where I can go learn mark up or at least get some basic commands?

simple mind Deleted user ⋅ March 11, 2014

I've written some entries on it in my Tips and Tricks book (linked from the side help menu - look at the first two entries in it), but the official Markdown documentation is here:

https://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/basics

Deleted user simple mind ⋅ March 11, 2014

nightborn March 11, 2014

I'm just seeing a white box. Ugh.

hot-lips March 11, 2014

Can you please put the toolbar back into the editor, I found that useful as I can't remember the HTML codes to add pictures, insert a hyperlink etc. I came to write an entry this afternoon & it was all gone! lol

pandora March 11, 2014

I LOVE how the editor box grows as I type! I was having trouble with the small space. Thanks for updating that! I am looking forward to the toolbar coming back--I do use asterisks for italics and bold, so that's fine, but the link and image tools I use. I did remember a bit of HTML, (img src) which was helpful this morning but I can't remember how to resize it or enter hyperlinks.

It's nice that you are open to suggestions and willing to try new things--thanks for all the work you do. :)

BlueEyedDevil March 11, 2014

So it's strictly commands for italics, bold, underline, etc for now? I kind of liked the toolbar from before...

Deleted user BlueEyedDevil ⋅ March 11, 2014

He said above he'd bring the toolbar back.

BlueEyedDevil Deleted user ⋅ March 11, 2014

I caught that part... was more concerned about the now, until it comes back.

I was having trouble adding photos before, now I am lost altogether. I am technologically impaired!! I just wish I could put them in more easily, as I can't put them in any more, sorry. T.Y. for being proactive with your site, for us.

Pretty Fly Jedi March 11, 2014

It has messed up how I write through mobile. I was able to write a full entry last night and it took quite awhile. I couldn't quite scroll back up to see the text I was writing. Not sure why but it advanced the writing box all the way down. As if I was writing at the bottom of the screen but my words were out of site at the top.

It starts off OK but once you go a few lines in is where the trouble starts. And since the box goes from one edge of my phone screen to another I can't tap enough space to scroll up.

It seems neat but on a phone it has some issues.

simple mind Pretty Fly Jedi ⋅ March 11, 2014

Any better now? I was seeing a bit of that on Chrome when zoomed but added a little magic sauce that seems to have fixed it on my end.

Pretty Fly Jedi simple mind ⋅ March 11, 2014

At a quick glance it seems to be much better :) I know some of it is partially due to me having an older smartphone and thebkeyboard takes half the screen. But it does look like the box is more the right size and moves with me now! :)

Deleted user March 11, 2014

I see no place to give my entry a title! I don't want them all to be Untitled. How do I put a title on my entry, please?

One Angry Dwarf March 11, 2014

oh jeez this conversation is long and i weighed in in the middle without reading it

LOL FORUM ETIQUETTE FAIL whatever anyway CH-CH-CH-CHAAAANGES

MageB March 11, 2014

What I have noticed is that the little thingy on the WYSIWYG bar that should let you insert pictures instead let's you put in links. Thanks for the resize thingy. I'll try it tomorrow. :)

H. Majesty T. Mudfish Queen March 12, 2014

Oh so this is why I couldn't type last night from my phone.... now I know what the "editor" IS.

I'm gonna try again but I think from my phone where I do a lot of my posts....it wasn't working. I know I'm not the only one that does a lot from their phone....

I'm gonna try....

-~Ender~- March 12, 2014

I understand that some people aren't happy with the new text box and it isn't working for them.

I like it. Very clean and it works just like it should.

Shattered March 13, 2014

Can anyone give a heads up on posting YouTube videos now? Since the update, I haven't been able to get one embedded correctly.

simple mind Shattered ⋅ March 13, 2014

Haven't heard of any issues, nothing should have changed there. You're just pasting in the URL link to the video?

Shattered simple mind ⋅ March 13, 2014

Yup. The one that's always worked before.

Deleted user March 15, 2014

I DO realize this is a FREE BETA site, why not make the next change an upside down editor that enters entries in backwards? Or totally flip the screen to have a mirror image so we can learn to read and post in reverse. That's a bit of sarcasm for those that might be offended. But for a FREE BETA site to continue it needs users. And for the most they should determine what they like. I do realize there has to be boundaries and limits but the editor is OUR basic way of posting entries. Seems like some things are good enough left alone. I have left sites before because I don't care for the way they are moving, and I can do it again. I will also spread the word. Boycotting for now, and then I will mosey on my way if this doesn't change. Just a post from another user........

simple mind Deleted user ⋅ March 15, 2014

Why the hostility? I'm actually in the process of implementing an optional setting to bring back the border to the editor's textarea. Because that's really what this is all about, right? A line that goes all the way around the text you're typing in, or is there something more extreme that's making it horrible?

Deleted user simple mind ⋅ March 15, 2014

No hostility meant. I was sort of referring to one of the above comment where they wrote their own program to use a special editor. My apologies to you. I know you are working hard to make this site as good as it can be. And I do realize it's free. I guess I just got caught up in the moment. I guess the issue is I just get started feeling comfortable with the look and feel and boom it's changed again. And we all know everything IS about ME. (sarcasm) ;-) I do know what BETA means, and I do agree you have to make changes to continue to grow. But you have to agree that with the closing of OD and this sites jump start you do have an amazing user base and we have come to be a part of that. Please accept my apology and I will try to be more sensitive in the future. Thanks for the quick response, that tells me my voice is being heard too. Have a GREAT weekend.

simple mind Deleted user ⋅ March 15, 2014

Thanks, I appreciate that. I do listen and try to make adjustments based on feedback. So it may not be exactly how it was, but there will be a setting to make the box look just like the comment boxes.

Nebiyah March 16, 2014

I for one love it. I think it's clean and modern, and actually better than the typical fixed-size text area. Took about 5 seconds of getting used to, and then I was sold. Nice job!

woman in the moon March 16, 2014

I like the editor. I like the tool bar to the left. All good.

Swimming With Killer Whales April 21, 2014

Editing SNAFU I am having problems with the order of my entry chapters.

Notice on the right hand side a box titled "3 published entries" underneath the title are a list of 3 entries. The last entry in the list is "My complaint is lengthy" I want that entry to be the first entry in the list, but I don't know how to rearrange the order or if it is even possible.

The first entry in the list "Attorney misconduct bureaucracy." I want to be the last entry or currently the 3rd entry in the list. But I don't know how to do that.

When I start writing a story and enter chapters as I write them, the first chapter and subsequent chapters are continually pushed down to the bottom as I add each chapter. Hypothetically, I finish the book and I have a list of chapters and someone comes along and reads my book. The person quite naturally starts reading the very first entry. The very first entry at the top of the list, is the very last chapter of my book. So that someone reading the top entry is reading the ending rather than the beginning.

The default always puts latest entries to the top of the heap, including the final chapter, or last entry of the book being at the top, or first entry. I write my books chronologically forward. If I wrote my chapters starting with the ending and go from there, this would not be a problem. I don't know anyone who writes backwards chronologically.

Last thing, Is it possible that I can rearrange the entries to whatever. That would solve my problem too. Look at my entry list on the right of my screen. How can I manipulate the entries in the order I want them to be in? If this can't be done it can't be done.

I hope you understand. I have been trying to figure this out before make anymore entries. Thank you so much for your concerns. I really, really appreciate it.
