Spending the weekend with my son, Ryan. He picked me up early this morning. Ran a few errands for me then back to his place. Then a day of shopping. First he bought his girlfriend her birthday present, a heating back massage machine that fits to a chair. She used one at Christmastime and loved it. I was surprised at the price, much more than I had imagined they would be, but if they give desired results it is well worth the money. Massage is expensive on a regular basis, so this looks more like an investment.
We had planned a trip to a local jeweler so I could have an antique pocket watch appraised and Ryan could begin looking at engagement rings, to learn what he needed to know and figure out his budget. A while back I offered him some rubies and diamond rings I no longer wear should he wish to use them. They are set in yellow gold and he was hoping for white. Anyway, while I took care of my business he did his looking. A sales lady was most helpful in answering his questions and showing a few rings he liked.
We showed her the stones and gold we had, discussed using the gold for melt, the stones inclusive in a ring Ryan liked and she made an offer. Ryan had no intention of buying, he was there to look, learn, and get in touch with the reality of jewelry market prices. We thanked her, said we'd think it over at lunch and went about our day.
We went on to shop for other items needed and make arrangements for dinner and a movie with Jessica's parents, which we did. Saw "The Lego Movie" which was very funny. Stopped at a gun store for a look at a few things and get something needed. Eye opening for me as I've never shopped for guns.
Ryan decided to stop at the bank for cash and we returned to the jeweler and he bought Jessica the engagement ring. He made a very wise decision financially and they made him an offer that won't come again, anywhere. The ring is stunning as it sits now with only diamonds in it, once the rubies are set it will be spectacular. I'll post a picture if I get a chance to see it before he gives it to her. Needless to say both Ryan and I were grinning ear to ear the rest of the day and struggling to be hush hush. Next Friday he picks up the finished ring.
I feel very blessed to see my son enter into a new phase of his life, to be making a mature and long thought through decision. I feel honored that he wanted me to go shopping with him and be asked for my opinion regarding his thinking and choices. I'm further pleased he chose to accept the gemstones I offered and continue the heirloom tradition. The rubies originally were my grandmother's so a lot of family history goes into this ring. He was responsible financially, didn't overextend himself and came out with a ring that would please any woman, and her mother. Pleasing the future mother-in-law is important and not necessarily an easy feat.
I thank God my son found a woman who is solid in her own life, educated, employed, comes from a strong and closely knit family who already love Ryan like he is their own. As a mother I couldn't possibly ask for a finer young lady as a daughter-in-law or for my son to be marrying into a better family. This couple is evenly yoked as any I recall seeing in many years and I truly believe God will bless them richly as they continue into their future.
I am exhausted in the very best of ways.
