Day 360.
Almost a year. Today is crazy. Derek died today. Death doesn't even phase me anymore. It's Thursday and someone else has died. I don't know how it happened, I just heard the screams and the shot. and then the cries. and the second shot.
I am mad though. Derek made the best chili in camp. He was also kind to Anna Beth before she was bitten. He held my hand while I cried when they silenced her.
Day 360. That's some crazy shit. It has almost been a year since "the incident" still no answers. Still no end. Just some rag tag camp in the middle of the wood. Only 20 of us left.
Wait, make that 19.
I watched them drag Derek's body to the pit. I know I should walk over there and say goodbye, but the words can't come out. I am tired of tears and goodbyes.
I often think, if someone finds this diary, what will they think of me? I was 16 when "the incident" happened. I was a cheerleader and I was happy. Now, I worry about chili in camp and will anyone say goodbye to me if I get bitten.
If? When? It seems that we should just embrace this fate. I will never go to prom. I will never graduate high school. I will never know who the bachelor picked.
Life sucks.
It's starting to get cold now. I decide I should go to Derek's tent and find his chili stuff before it get's raided by the others. That is the rule around camp. You die, your stuff get's taken by the rest. I have a backpack full of clothes, a picture of my family, and my notebook... All that defines me in this world.
Derek's tent is the same as mine. Bare except for some clothes, cooking supplies, and books. He was the camp chef, but before "the incident" all he did was flip burgers at McDonalds. He was only a couple years older than me.
I pick up his backpack. A limegreen bag with a faded patch on it that read "remove this and Die". Derek thought himself to be a bad ass. I laugh to myself and sling the back pack on my shoulder.
"Thanks Dude. I needed a new pack. Say Hi to Anna Beth and I'll catch you on the other side" I say to the tent. Now, Ive said my goodbyes and walk back to my tent.
Maybe tomorrow will be my day.
