I’ve created my schedule for the remainder of the week. THE BIG QUESTION is if I’ll be receiving my package on Friday or not. You see, this is the nightmare and horror of Pre-Ordering a Physical Copy of a video game (which I almost always have to do if I’m getting a Collector or Limited Edition set). I pre-order the game. It must be shipped to me. In my experience, despite it being a key frustration, that means I receive the game typically THREE DAYS AFTER RELEASE. As opposed to, y’know, driving an hour to my nearest electronics store, buying the game the DAY IT COMES OUT, driving an hour back. Why this is particularly frustrating is that… I used to work in Video Games Retail. For a big game release, the store would receive a butt ton of copies the week of (many days in advance, sometimes a week or more). Stores would even receive shipments of additional product on the day OF release if the game seemed like it would sell out. Now, technically, these are UNSOLD GAMES. The copy coming to me has already been paid for. Even if a game company is worried about breaking Street Date, if you are sending me what I paid for through 3-5 day shipping… send it to me 2 days before the street date. Then it will get to me ON street date or one to two days after. Sending it to me ON street date means it won’t get to me until 3 to 5 days later. I know this is First World Problems in a big way but it is also a fundamental frustration of Rural Communities as well. We have no Best Buy, we have no Game Stop, and Wal Mart is still debating whether they are going to sell violent video games. If I’m to purchase a physical copy of a game, I must do so online or take a long round trip drive. ESPECIALLY if I’ve pre-ordered the game… I should receive the game on release day. Trust that this is something you’ll be hearing more about this week. Video Game is released on Friday. I am supposed to get a confirmation number to track my shipment. If Friday comes and I have no confirmation number and no product… I’ll be rather irked.
When I see things like this I think both “You never know until you ask” and also “Are you fucking serious?”
