small wonders in poetry

Don’t let your world get small.
Don’t hole yourself up inside an idea or an identity.
Don’t hole yourself up between four literal walls.

Nothing will drive you crazier than
if you letting your world get small.
When you’ve only got a few concerns,
any tiny thing drives you up a wall.
Make new friends.
See new places.
Do new stuff.
Don’t let your world get small.

Don’t let your world get small,
do you really want to have a nervous breakdown
if you didn’t get a chance to mow your lawn?

Don’t let your world get small,
do you really want to lose a lover
over how much hair she leaves in the tub?

Don’t let your world get small,
instead of getting obsessive
progress to seeing how much
there is out there to love.

Don’t let your world get small,
it will only drive you mad
drive yourself anywhere
even the goddamn mall
if it’s somewhere new
somewhere to discover
there’s a lot more you
than your four walls belie
there’s only so much earth
but there is infinite sky.
