Well, it's no Stockholm.
I was going to lie in this morning however, as anyone who knows me can tell you, I'm not the sort that can just lie around. I woke up at 8 and that was it. Had to be up. It's a little annoying but it does at least mean I can get stuff done in the day.
So I had some breakfast (which is, in it's self a rarity. I'm trying to be all healthy at the moment so I'm having fruit first thing in the morning and trying to limit my caffeine and alcohol intake. This morning demanded bacon of me though) and set out. I've been walking ever since. Have easily ambled 10 miles today so I'm going to count that as my exercise. Though I may go to the swimming pool later on. They've got a jacuzzi. Sorry, I digress.
It's an interesting enough city. It's certainly bizarre how you can walk off the main street and be in a slum if you go in one direction and be in a stereotypical irish village if you go the other. I've been over most of it today and wandering into a bunch of pretty interesting places. The only major downside was that the slums were well and truly boarded up which destroyed any plans of urban exploration I may have had.
I quite like looking at ruined buildings. I find them interesting because my imagination always supplies me with the details of what they were like before. It's probably the same reason I enjoy looking at castles and churches.
Incidentally found 3 pretty cool churches to look around. One of them charges me 5 euros to get in which was a bit of a dick but it was an extremely cool church. Annoyingly all three forbid photos being taken. Hey ho.
Other things about Cork. It has a geek population but they seem to be much more in the minority here then Newcastle. The local geek shop focused almost exclusively on Warhammer and comics. So there's at least one reason not to live here.
Booze is also pretty expensive. Not Stockholm expensive but it's about a fiver for a decent glass of wine. This is, however, helping with the "limiting my intake" plan.
Drivers in Cork are all nutters. I can state that with some certainty. The traffic lights don't go through amber on the way back to green and they're all off the mark at high speed as soon as it happens so you really need to use the crossing areas. Fortunately there's a few of these on every street. I'm guessing the reason for the insanity on the roads is that the roads themselves are tiny and because the parking is practically non-existent everyone just parks on the curb. We've taken the taxi to work every day and there hasn't been a time yet where I haven't thought we were going to crash. The roads are also very badly signposted. Saw a man driving the wrong way down a one way street today in full traffic. Poor bloke nearly had an aneurism when he realised.
So it's been productive so far. I've come back to the hotel for lunch and to give my bad knee a rest as it's complaining about the walk. I think something relaxing for this afternoon. Perhaps the cinema? I could go check out a movie. We'll see.
Stay cool and until next time don't forget to ramble. I never do.
