ALS
I heard this morning that my mother’s cousin, Nikki passed away. I guess that makes her my cousin in some kind of once removed way.
She was diagnosed with ALS last fall.
That is an awful, gruesome affliction.
I wasn’t close with her. Nor was my mother. In fact they went twenty years without talking even though they grew up a few miles, walking distance, apart. It is only in the last few years they started spending a little more time together.
At 4 years old I was the ring bearer at Nikki and Bert’s wedding. I remember being terribly disappointed arriving at the Church. In my 4 year old brain, “walking down the aisle” had something to do with an island. Not being shoved into a suit and tie and having to go into a Church, the most boring place on the planet.
It is probably a blessing. She had no quality of life at all. She couldn’t swallow, couldn’t speak.
No.
