Actor Peter O'Toole came to the US in the late 40s, early 50's for the first time to be in a play or a movie or whatever. He was shocked that hot dogs were being sold by street vendors and you could have as many as you wanted. Meat was still scarce in post WWII England.

Another meat story - Lord and Lady Mountbatten went to India soon after the war - he was to preside over the de-colonization of India - he was a viceroy. Anyway Lady M. had two small dogs with her and when they arrived she asked the servants for something to feed the dogs. They brought her chicken - something she had not seen /eaten in a long time.
