I never had a chance to post this last month due to technical issues, OD's demise and other ailments I don't want to get into.
Better late than never... here are in my humble opinion the best ten movies of 2013. Leave a note if you agree or disagree with my picks.
Peter
10. Star Trek: Into Darkness
By far the best sequel of the year. Benedict Cumberbach was amazing as the villain, stealing almost every scene he was in. The script was good, paid homage to movies of Trek history and was a fitting sequel to the first reboot, setting the stages for the next movie which I hope comes out sooner rather than later.
9. Captain Phillips
This was a moving picture. Great direction and even better acting turned what was a small media story into a very gripping and powerful movie. I'm a little shocked Tom wasn't nominated for best actor, but it was a tight field this year.
8. Gravity
This was a great movie to check out, but like Cast Away, it's only a movie you can see once and that's about it. The first time is amazing to check out... but upon other viewings it loses its luster.
7. A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III
Directed by Roman Coppola and co written by Coppola and Wes Anderson, this movie was a lot of fun to watch. The cast was great and the script was hilarious. Toss in Bill Murray and you have cinema gold.
6. Enough Said
One of James Gandolfini's last roles before his passing, this romantic comedy was really good. A sweet film that I think will surprise a lot of people if they give it a chance.
5. The Dallas Buyers Club
This movie was shocking, powerful and gripping. McConaughey gave an oscar worthy performance in this powerful true story of a man just trying to get by after being told he is HIV positive and has less than a month to live.
4. The Wolf of Wall Street
Just like the Forbes article that tried to slam this 'wolf' in the media... the more Martin Scorsese tried to make the wolf look bad, the more cool he looked on screen. He was like Velcro, nothing stuck to him even when we knew he was 100% guilty. The movie is more funny that it is serious, and it's hard to believe this really happened. A lot of fun to watch if you're not one of the millions of people this guy really ripped off.
3. The World's End
This is by far one of the most underrated movies of 2013 in my opinion. The moment I heard this was coming out, I was super excited. I was a huge fan of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, so I was super pumped to check this one out. I was not disappointed, as this was by far the best action/comedy of the year.
2. 12 Years a Slave
This was a disturbing movie... shocking how things went on in the south during the pre-civil war slave trade. It was the harrowing true story of a free man who was kidnapped and forced into slavery for over a decade. This happened far too often and still does today in certain parts of the world. a lesson we must heed if we are to fully eradicate slavery forever...
1. American Hustle
This movie just gets better every time I watch it. Bradley Cooper is hilarious. Amy Adams is seductive and drop dead gorgeous, which is what made her character so damn dangerous. Christian Bale is the only guy who might be able to pull off an upset for best actor this month. Cameos by Robert DeNiro an Louis CK is just icing on the cake to what was in my humble opinion the best movie of 2013, hands down!
