The interview was OK. I say this because I didn’t feel like I aced it, but I do feel confident I performed well.

I also passed the test. The second part of the test was working with Karl (who would potentially be my boss) using schematics and diagrams. I was able to reason myself through all of the answers. There was one where you were supposed to figure out what system could carry a particular load better. It was kind of a trick question. I stared at the schematic and was like, “These two aren’t even connected.” And Karl started laughing. That was exactly the answer he was looking for, but apparently something about my voice or face were comical.
I had the interviewers laughing a few times, too, so that is good.

After the interview when I was working with just Karl (not HR and the other guy in the panel interview) I asked him REALISTICALLY if he thought I would do well in this particular job and what would make me more competitive and he tried to pussyfoot around it – talking about making sure you fit in and work well with the people you’re with… which I took to be a slight on being female but that might have just been me reading between the lines. I wondered even if I was the most qualified person in the room if I would still be overlooked, because, well, life is awesome like that. He finally said that there are a few courses online it would be beneficial for me to complete. I see it like this, the company has an extensive training program (it is very specific and there really isn’t a proper training program that one-size-fits-all) The independent training is very expensive too ($20,000) for a certificate. I suggested I’m not against doing something like that – it would be better if a company hired me and would pay for the training since they are going to train you anyway. But for me, paying $20,000 to get a cert that may or may not help me get a job in a field that is so small and specific there is no guarantee, that is pretty much exactly what I did with aviation and see how well that worked out for me? I absolutely won’t do it unless I can pay for it in cash, and if there is a very specific benefit to doing it. It’s not that I’m greedy, I’m just smarter than I was when I started college almost 10 years ago.

Life goes on. <3 Sarah
