The storms continue in The View from the Terrace

And so it goes on; the wind is raging, rain is falling; there is water coming under the kitchen door and the roof is leaking in the bedroom.

But we are getting off lightly compared to others. The situation in the Somerset Levels is even worse while the south west has been battered by yet more storms. In my home town of Shrewsbury the River Severn has flooded the Quarry Park where the flower show is held, and the car park where we leave the car when we visit there. It is also across the playing field of my old school, Shrewsbury High School. To be honest I do remember that happening when I was at the school and also people in boats in some of the districts, but that was before they put the flood defences in, now it is happening again with flood defences.

Last year and the year before we had weeks and weeks of snow and this year it has been rain. I remember these things happening in odd years in the past but not year after year like this.

It has been one thing after another here lately. Two weeks ago our village shop and post office closed with only a weeks notice, then a few days ago our car packed up, so here we were with no shop and no car to drive to the next village, the bus between the villages was cut last year. I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and had to ask my son to come home early from work to take me. Still, I am lucky I can do that. I do wonder how some of the elderly people who don't drive will manage now. We have a bus to town, 12 miles away, but no bus to the next village a mile and a half away, it's mad! and the doctor, the church, the pub and now the shop and post office are all in the next village.

We had a brief respite from the weather on Monday and I did manage to finally plant my winter window boxes, lilac and yellow pansies. I really enjoyed doing that. I love being out there doing my garden, listening to the birds. I'm looking forward to getting out more as the weather improves.
