miracles in poetry

there are miracles
but they’re even rarer than
we could ever care to admit
there are miracles
but they don’t come on command
there are miracles
but sometimes we don’t see them
until it’s far too late if ever
there are miracles
stop pushing it will only make it hurt more
there are miracles
stop pushing it will only make it even less likely

there are miracles
maybe in two hundred years
they will know why they happened
but we won’t when they’ve happened
and that’s all that really matters
there are miracles
maybe only at random
maybe only in fashions that
seem random to our small short-lived minds
there are miracles
but they don’t come when asked
you could wait forever for one
two can come in the same hour
there are miracles
but they’re not on our time
they’re not on our dime

there are miracles
I wonder how many I’ve missed
there are miracles
I wonder how many I thought
were just something else
something more mundane
just accidents
there are miracles
maybe they are just accidents
but they have meaning anyway
and that’s just what people are
half-aware eyes here just
to interpret magic in coin flips
in dice rolls in happenstance
in random chance
there are miracles
because we see them so
there are miracles
and so I am waiting
I am not demanding
but I’m certainly waiting
as long as I can
to see
