Write a short story using the following words: barrage, revolutionary, scar, golden, and research.
Someone told me something and I needed to find out if it’s true. I was told to go to an address to find what I would need. I raced toward the building, lightning streaking the sky. One large flash illuminated the tattered golden words above the door: Records.
As I pushed my way in, I could see lights in a room at the end of the hall. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who would be conducting research at this hour.
In this day and age, magic is frowned up, often dismissed as “imagination”, or “wishful thinking”.
Then one of the solitaries rose up, her ideology of educating those of other cultures and belief systems was considered a revolutionary idea. It still is in this era.
I am not sure if it was synchronicity, but I happened to catch a glimpse of her picture, drawn in the months before her death. I saw how the light softened her wrinkles, how her hair seemed to be more silver than white, and her smile…it was as if the picture was alive.
I walked into the area and saw there was a display for books about her. Looking at all the writings, there was a barrage of information at my fingertips. I just didn’t know where to begin.
Hours passed and my frustration got the best of me. I shoved a book aside, resting my head on my forearms while blinking back tears. I felt defeated.
I started putting away other books I had looked through when I dropped one on the floor. I screamed internally, forcing myself to breathe.
When I went to pick up the book, I saw the back piece torn a bit. There was something peeking out. I used my nail to slide the rest of the paper off to reveal a drawing. I felt light-headed.
It was a picture of me. Upon further inspection, I saw that the drawing even had the scar right where I do, and then I noticed the date on the lower right hand corner.
“1613-no. 7.”
