The Best I Can in Everyday Ramblings

Yesterday afternoon the beautiful easy to be out and about in (on foot, sled, snowboard, and skies) snow started to get pelted with freezing rain and now we are living in Ice World. I just received a text from our local emergency authorities saying do not go out. Just don’t. Okay then. I have to admit I did trek out to the trash area with my spiked shoe covers and my trek poles a bit earlier. Now I know why they have sharp points. :)
It is not serious yet but provisions are getting a bit low. I ate my last piece of fresh fruit on Friday night. The good news is that in a few hours the temperature will get above freezing and we will start to thaw. This storm has been quite the thing here but I learned my lesson from the 2008 debacle and was way better prepared for this one.
Being snowbound is kind of like watching a fire, mesmerizing. Hours pass and you don’t know what you have been doing. I did get out for a short trek yesterday afternoon and came upon the snow fellow above. I did a Jane Fonda Walkout practice and a Fit and Strong weight lifting practice in my kitchen. I did yoga in my living room. (I do not recommend the Jane Fonda AM PM yoga DVD, it is a mash up of Pilates and weight lifting and the attention to breath is all wonky, the Prime Walkout and Fit and Strong one’s are great though.) I took a long bath. Read.
But critical thinking is somewhat compromised, I am not sure why. Completely out of my normal routine all the anchors of my day are in odd places or not there at all. There is a holiday feel to everything and one wants to indulge. The opportunistic ants are certainly whooping it up in my kitchen and bathroom.
Poor Kes. It is her birthday tomorrow and we were going to have a festive and modestly inebriated dinner out here in Portland last night to celebrate. We have to plan this because of, well, Weight Watchers. That was going to be her present from me as we are careful about accumulating unnecessary things at this point and they are preparing to launch into a major kitchen remodel and are on a strict budget.
Here in the modern world of the future I was able to send her an Amazon gift card yesterday so she could indulge and order a knitting book she does not need (her contractor, with the owner’s blessing, gave her a big box of yarn from a basement in another house he is working at. A hoard from the 60’s. Orlon! Remember Orlon? My sisters, who are both knitters, are having a field day researching this yarn stash) and an electronic copy of the Penelope Lively book.
It is a marvelous book and in it she talks about another book I am reading and loving The Old Ways A Journey on Foot by Robert Macfarlane.
Mostly though since Thursday we (in my small world) have been talking care of the birds. Making sure they have water to drink and food. I had just received a big box of all the medical supplies I need for Sammy and I am grateful at my foresight there.
By tomorrow we will be digging out and stocking back up and returning to work.
I intend to enjoy the rest of this day the best I can given my compromised snowed in cognitive abilities...
