I had planned on Highway 1 from Morro Bay to Monterey but it was closed to thru traffic until sometime in September. The only option to see it was to drive up to the closure, backtrack back down to Highway 41 and then east to 101 north to Monterey, down Highway 1 to the closure and back up to Monterey. Too much driving and too much time to bother just for the scenery. I just did Highway 41 to 101 and Monterey.

And of course Emma Pennyworth (the GPS) got confused in Monterey when I tried to get back to Highway 1 to go up to Halfmoon Bay and Highway 92 east to San Mateo. I found the right path and turned Emma off. And of course I missed our exit into San Mateo and got funneled onto the San Mateo bridge across the bay to Hayward. Six miles of bridge, a U-turn, a $5 toll, and six miles back across the bridge to the proper exit.

We found my cousin’s house with no problem. A beautiful house in a beautiful neighborhood. They have done everything right. Successful careers, purchasing the house in 1970 for $35,000, and filling the house with beautiful artifacts for forty-eight years. She and her husband never bragged about the house’s worth now, but while we were out for a drive she did point out a neighboring house listed for sale for 2.1 million dollars. Enough said.

We spent two nights there while Mom and her caught up with family gossip.

We never did make it into San Francisco for touristy stuff.

We were up early this morning to continue north on Highway 1.

To be continued-
