Life with Moose, the Rescue Lab in Misc. Thoughts opinions, the whole trash can.

My wife works with a woman who volunteers, and is a foster for Labradors, who have been abandoned. She knew we had Labs in the past.

Bear was a chocolate English Lab, which was given to us when we lived in Southlake, TX. Cooper soon followed, in 1999 as a puppy. He was a standard Yellow lab, and goofy. They both were wonderful dogs. We moved back to Colorado in 2002. Bear passed after a good life of 13 1/2 years in 2012, of a stroke. Cooper passed in 2014 at 15 years of age. He died of literally old age. Funny thing about Cooper, we had the same Birthday and he died a week after he turned 15.

My wife was asked, “Did you see the new baby, on the website”? Well, she looked and I got a text. Look at this Lab!!!. Enter Moose.

We filled out the application. Moose is a year and a half English Lab, black in color. He was abandoned, by his owner. He is an escape artist, and was found wandering, and picked up. The dog was chipped, and the owner never claimed him.

Moose was taken to the Safe Harbor Lab rescue in Golden, CO. Moose is “crate trained” and Housebroken. After that, all bets are off. He is as wild as they come. Non stop energy, wants everyone to love him and be loved. He wants to play with other dogs, but he is a little on the rough side. Moose is a diamond in the rough that needs a lot of polishing. Our people skills are terrible, but when you are a year and a half with NO TRAINING, you as the dog do not know otherwise. The second Foster provider for Safe Harbor is a professional dog trainer, and had Moose for two weeks. He sees potential in Moose, as we do. It is going to take time. Safe Harbor is providing two training sessions, but we will certainly need more.

Basic commands well, this is coming slow. We can’t master sit, and stay is sorta coming into play. NO is a big part of our vocabulary. Walking on a leash, has gotten better. I bought another harness, that fastens with the leash hook up at the chest area. This really helps in the lunging and tugging. This is night and day from the start and a week has passed.

I had an Invisible Fence, which kept our Labs in the yard. We have “theme” fencing, which I cannot modify, by HOA rules. I have to repair the back of it, due to age. I also found out that the Metro District, which maintains the Greenbelt, cut the wiring, so I have to get that repaired and updated. Invisible Fence comes tomorrow for repair and replace.

I will update the progress of Mr. Moose. As information, that was the dogs name when we got him, and it is appropriate. I am putting the morning walk on hold, unfortunately, due to 30 gusting to 60 mph winds. There is a front coming in, but maybe we can get a 25 minute in later on.
