double meaning blues in poetry

I tried raising some Cain
but I was just unable
tried raising racing horses
but I ended up unstable
tried rising dough in a warm kitchen
but I couldn’t raise the bread
tried calling in to the live show
when I did the line was dead
I tried going of my mind
but it was all just in my head

tripped and fell at the construction site
the workers all just kept on beaming
sometimes it can get pretty ugly
how life’s full of double meanings

I tried the sink-or-swim thing
but the basin was too small
sat down just under the faucet
I just flooded out the hall
tried pulling my weight once
but the line was just too long
asked the preacher for last rites
but the pastor got them wrong
his choir tried selling out
the label got them for a song

took my old beer cans to church
but no one was redeeming
sometimes it gets pretty goddamned ugly
how life’s full of double meanings

king made out of candyfloss
got caught out in the reign
champion diver went to France
and then she went in seine
tried using keeping my head in the fight
but I just ended up brained
bet three ducks on a poker hand
and then I lost the game
tried running with the cool kids
sprained my leg and pulled up lame
