Excessive Preparation & Starvation in General Mental Anesthesia

I think this sums up ulcerative colitis pretty well. I was being given an injection of medication into my IV and had to immediately run to the bathroom with the syringe still in my arm!

So yesterday was rough!

Had a colonoscopy (I’ve had about 15 of them) but this one was more complicated as the prep for it was quite excessive.

Generally (in the last few years) you can just do a Gatorade and Miralax mix.  It’s a ridiculous amount of fluid that you have to drink and over the course of about 6 hours you go to the bathroom frequently etc…

Now, with the severity of my condition, that is extraordinarily painful.  However, I was given pills first (as if I needed a stool softener with everything just being liquid and blood anyhow) then a few hours later.  7pm pills (wait a few hours) then at 10pm Miralax/Gatorade, then more Miralax/Gatorade at 6am!

My test wasn’t scheduled until 1:30pm and I had to stop eating (clear liquid diet) the day before around 8am.

1:30 came and went… No one came to my room, I asked for information, my nurse tried to get some, but no one responded to her.  2, 3, 4pm… I dozed off about 4:30 for a half hour and when I woke up at 5pm and no one came by I started freaking out.  I don’t want to have to go through this colon prep again!

An hour later, I finally got some info.  The Dr. had an emergency, but they were still going to do the colonoscopy that night.

It happened around 8pm after an ultrasound (which was painful and showed the gallstones) and 36 or so hours after I’ve eaten anything.  The test went ok, my prep was good, but their goal was to scope everything (to go ALL the way in - the reason for the excessive preparation) and they couldn’t.

I’ve never been told this before, but the Dr. said that my large intestine is twisted and that’s why he couldn’t get the scope all the way in.

How does it get twisted?  Could that be the reason for all this additional and severe pain?  When did it happen?  How long have I’ve been living like this?  How has it been affecting me?  What can be done about it?  All questions I have for him when I see him again, except he’s off today… Ugh.

And get this… Last night, they made a special thing for me so I could eat after hours. Now onto solid liquids. I had chicken noodle soup and tolerated it well. There was significant bleeding, but that was because I just had a colonoscopy. So the cafeteria sent me up a tray of food this morning that I didn’t ask for. It was creamed oatmeal and a carton of milk, coffee with dairy creamer.... Seriously? I’m lactose intolerant and if I was healthy, that alone would put me in the hospital!

So I called to order my own food. I asked for the chicken noodle soup and they said I couldn’t have it, but that I could have cream of noodle soup. WTF is wrong with this system?!

Oye Vey.

Also, finally got a new IV!  If you read my previous post you’ll know what an accomplishment that is!

So that’s all I have for now.  Still require Fentanyl for pain which sucks.  That hasn’t gone down at all and when new info comes my way, I’ll post.  Sorry for lack of responses, like I said, yesterday was particularly difficult and truth be told, I really am in a lot of pain (more severe than I’m used to) and it’s hard to concentrate on anything.

I am aware of all the comments and of course the shares and donations on the  GO FUND ME PAGE Thank you all for that.  With the medical bills like my gastroenterologist visit that led to this necessary hospitalization costing $319 and I’ll have to go back there after I’m discharged (though I’m not sure when that will be yet) every penny counts.

I know I’ve said it many times, but I’m very humbled and greatful to all of you.  Thank you so much!
