AXP Formal 5/10/2004

My friend Shane in AXP had asked me about two weeks ago to go to his formal with him. I said yes because he's a cool guy and I figured 'Hell free food and hotel room, why not?' I should've said I was busy that day or something because it was possibly the worst night of my life. First I was running around all day because I got a late start because of my sexathon the night before.

I missed my first class so I could work on my poster presentation which I hadn't started and was due by two o'clock. I remembered to bring my floppy disk to my second class for our presentation on our experiment, but I forgot to bring my paper, which was also due that day and worth 25% of my grade. I finished the poster presentation late (at around 3 o'clock) but then went to the wrong building and never found the research fair, which meant that all the running around had been for nothing.

It was now 4 o'clock and Shane was supposed to be picking me up soon. I looked like absolute crap and I had no make-up on. He called me to tell me that we'd be leaving later we had planned which I thought was great. I took a nap when I got back to my apartment...I ended up sleeping for an hour and a half. I flipped out, and then saw Shane hadn't even called, so I called him. He said he'd pick me up in a little while and that everyone had gotten a late start. On one hand I was glad I got to nap, but on the other hand, I was pissed...If I'd known we'd be leaving this late I could've gotten my hair done, or done my make-up or something. I was hanging out at Shane's house for awhile; make a long story short, we left at 7, which was when the formal started. Dinner started at 8:30, which was still cutting it close because neither Shane nor I was ready.

Of course, we got lost...several times. We had the wrong directions or something I think. We ended up not getting to the hotel until 10. To make matters even worse, the hotel was split up into two buildings; the ballrooms and some hotel rooms were in one building, and in another building about a quarter of a mile away, was more hotel rooms. We of course had to be placed in the rooms that were a quarter mile away. the guy that drove us, Chris, was already pissed off that he missed a large chunk of the formal and just ordered us to get changed in the bathroom instead of him driving to the hotel rooms and back.

The music sucked (they played "Mmmm Bop" by the Hanson brothers and about half of the Britney Spears CD. We just made it to dinner…I was hastily piling food onto my plate as the caterers were putting the dinner dishes away.

Henry had my license so I couldn’t get drinks. Shane got me one but it got annoying to have to keep asking him so I just nursed my pineapple and vodka all night.

Shane kept leaving me. It sucked because I didn’t really know any people there besides him and I didn’t want to eat alone. Luckily I spotted Diana, an alumni from my sorority, so I stuck by her for a lot of the night.

I was outside later that night with a girl named Jenny, who I knew from my cell biology class. We were just making small talk when I mentioned my friend Corinne in the conversation. Jenny’s date, Steve, is Corinne’s ex-boyfriend, and made a comment "Yeah…I know Corinne." Sensing that the conversation was about to sour I simply replied, "Yeah I know you know her," and attempted to change the topic of conversation. Unfortunately for him, he started bad-mouthing Corinne so I kept saying, "Just shut the fuck up. She’s my friend, don’t bad mouth her in front of me. Just stop fucking talking." He wouldn’t, so Jenny brought Steve inside and I went for a walk with Shane. Then Shane went back inside and I was alone again. I didn’t want to go inside because I didn’t want to continue our argument. I was tired of chasing Shane so I called Corinne and replayed the details.

I was on the phone for a half an hour, attempting to kill time when Shane came outside to look for me. He did compliment me on how good I looked, so he earned some brownie points for that. It’s just if you’re bringing a date to formal, and you know that s/he doesn’t know anyone, it’d be really fantastic if you didn’t constantly leave them by themselves.

The rest of the night was bogus. We all walked around the hotel grounds smoking and drinking, but the hotel manager was a Nazi and kept following us and breaking us up. He followed us a half a mile away from the hotel into the woods and told us we had to go back to our rooms because we were "waking up the other hotel guests." A half mile away? I think not.

I fell asleep around four in the morning after we baked out Shane’s friends’ room. Some of the frat boys were ridiculous trashed. Shane’s little fraternity brother, Dan, kept falling over and throwing random things around the room. There was another guy that kept talking about the Care Bears…I dunno, those AXP boys are just damn shady.

After getting through traffic on the way back we got to campus around 2 o’clock. I was so exhausted and fall asleep as soon as I got into my room, which meant that I missed Spring Fling…
