Yesterday we had a lovely lunch and visit with Joyce, my best friend in college. I think it had been about 20 years since I last saw her. She lives on a farm in Wyoming. Her husband passed away last spring. I was a bridesmaid at their wedding and she was the photographer at mine. Both these weddings occurred in the spring of 1958. There has been lots of water passing under the bridge since then. It was good to see her and meet her daughter.

Another good friend, Shirlee, passed away on New Year’s Day. I only knew her for 17 years. We met her and her husband playing bridge shortly after we moved to Colorado. We hit it off as friends right from the start, and along with another couple which we knew from many years back have stayed close throughout the years, sharing many family events, pizzas, ups and downs of growing older, as well as hundreds of games of cards. Poor Shirlee was the victim of Alzheimers and spent her last year or so in memory care facilities…but, for as long as she was able, her devoted husband Jim brought her out to meet us all at our favorite pizza place every couple of months. I can’t begin to tell you how talented, funny, caring and beautiful this lady was. We have already been missing her for quite awhile… Rest in peace, dear Shirlee.
