We went away again this last weekend. Our son told us that we are always away and obviously have too much money! This time it was to our regular John Denver event in Coventry. The one at the Wirral that we went to 2 weeks ago was an extra event put on by a different friend.

We had a great day on Saturday, blighted only by the fact that one of our oldest members who has organised the entertainment for years and has always been a life and soul of the party has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It was sad to see him sitting quietly beside his wife looking a little bewildered. One of the entertainers managed to get him up on stage to do a song with him which he managed quite well. He told us later he will bring his guitar next time as it is good for him to keep doing things. I do hope he will be able to do that at next years get together.

We thoroughly enjoyed the day’s entertainment of music by many different members. Hubby and I did a few songs each. This is me doing my stuff, though I wish I didn’t look as if I was afraid I might get the words wrong, the photographer caught me at the wrong moment!

We had a raffle where some of us won stuff that we had probably donated a few years ago, but who cares so long as we raised a bit of money for charity which this year was shared between a wildlife charity and Alzheimer’s Reasearch. Afterwards we all enjoyed a fish and chip supper followed by a short concert from two old members that we hadn’t seen for a few years.

On the way home on Sunday Hubby and I decided to visit Warwick. We went there once 37 years ago. That time we went to the castle. You need to take out a second mortage to visit Warwick Castle nowaday as it has become a medieval theme park, so we decided to have a look around the town and the main church.

The church was St Mary’s. I discovered a while back that my 5 x great grand parents were married there which was my reason for wanting to see it. I hadn’t realised what an important church it was. It was the parish church for the castle and many of the Earls of Warwick had very impressive tombs there including Robert Dudley, Queen Elizabeth 1’s paramour.

I managed the steps down to the crypt and would have loved to have gone up the tower which was open to visitors but sadly my knees are not up to long flights of steps any more. It was a very impressive tower and the view from the top must have been wonderful.

Afterwards we found a nice little place to have lunch and then had a walk around the town. Then it was time to set off home as Hubby doesn’t like driving in the dark and now that the clocks have gone back it gets dark around 5pm. We arrived home in time to stop off at the garden centre and get a few more pansies for my winter hanging baskets. I hope to be able to finish those sometime this week.
