It has been over a year since Molly died. I couldn’t even think about getting a dog for quite some time. Neither could hubby. But something started tugging at me a couple of months ago. I knew I didn’t want a puppy. For several reasons but the most important one being that I didn’t want to do the whole housebreaking, chewing, biting thing all over again. Not at our ages.
So I did some searching on-line at various sites. I wanted a small dog because it fits our lifestyle better. I showed a couple of pictures to hubby. He was on board with it so I filled out a couple of adoption forms. (I tried the pounds for the neighboring towns…you have no idea how many pit bulls there are around here. Nothing against them, but first of all, too large. Secondly, you don’t know how they were raised or why they were in the pound to begin with)
I found what I thought was the perfect fit. Her name is Holly and she’s a 6 year old shih tzu. I immediately contacted the rescue site. The response came back that the foster mom thought she should go to a home that already HAS a dog. No where in her description did it say that. I was very disappointed and said that we would love to make Holly a good and loving home and would they reconsider.
No. They wouldn’t. As a matter of fact, she said, Holly was meeting with a prospective family the next day. I then wrote back that even though I was disappointed, the ultimate goal is to get Holly a loving home.
I received an email from the rescue the next day saying they had a little one that had just become available for adoption and before they posted her picture on-line, they wanted me to take a look and see if I was interested. They sent me 3 pictures. I immediately responded “YES! What is the next step??”
Before I knew it, the foster mom called and we set up a time to go see her. The rescue place named her Alexa. She doesn’t look like she would be an Alexa so hubby and I decided on Maggie as her name. She is approximately 4 years old, has had at least one litter of puppies and currently weighs only about 7 pounds. It wasn’t love at first sight on HER part when we first met but she eventually warmed up to us. Very, very shy and quiet. But our other experiences had been with puppies. And they love EVERYBODY! LOL!
So we signed the paperwork, drove her home (She stood on my lap the entire way looking out the window), let her explore the neighborhood a little while we tried to get her to go potty and then took her inside our home to explore. Never once did her little tail come out from between her legs. But we’re very patient people.
We put her in bed with us and she zonked out immediately and slept through the night. This has been the first full day we’ve had her and she is still shy. And quiet. I haven’t heard a bark, a growl or a whimper from her. She FINALLY ate some food and drank some water.
She took a nap on the bed this afternoon with hubby and is sleeping peacefully right now. She has already stolen our hearts. I get tears in my eyes thinking what she went through before she was found. But I can’t dwell on that or it will drive me crazy.
Miss Maggie is going to be just fine. And so are we.
