Calm under fire, isn’t that what a good Captain is?
I have to cover in another store once a week. This all stems from a bit ago when there was a mutiny among managers and a bunch quit at once. Covering is one thing.
I’m stressed because this store hasn’t gotten their biannual inspection yet. I feel pride that I passed last July, but I’ll give due credit to my General Manager. One short text, and she flew into the store without even showering, effectively covering my ass. Sure, I set the store up. But she’s a 25 year veteran. She knows what to look for.
I won’t get popped for the same shit twice.
Oh, if only you knew the stupid shit you can lose points for, that the average customer would go “I don’t give a frak, give me my frakking food.”
My inspection last July? 9:30 am on a SATURDAY. This is practically unheard of. Recently, a store got hit at 8:30 pm.
It’s one thing to coach the crew you know. It’s another to be a hard-ass to a bunch of people you don’t know. Last time I was there? Chick had a cup of soda on the line. We were getting killed, so I didn’t scold her heavily. Low volume store = no people. My store is high volume, and I’d fire someone for doing something like that. Once caught a kid eating on the line. Fired him on the spot.
I still don’t know what day this will be. I dropped by the store to get a pep talk from the Boss Lady. She saw how absolutely nervous I was during the inspection, and said it probably effected the crew. (I literally had only two/three other employees during my inspection; it was morning.) She told me to take a deep breath and relax.
Translation? Well. What would I tell myself? I got the highest inspection score in our area. (Seriously, I did. Well, Boss Lady and I did.)
Mr. Sulu, standard orbit.
(I got this, I got this, I got this, I got this, I got this, I got this, I got this. :: crosses fingers :: )

You refer to it as a "store", but it has "the line". So I'm presuming this is food service. Been there, done that, wouldn't go back for $100 an hour. The service industries attract the bottom-of-the-barrel employees. People who lack either the abilit, or the confidence to work in anything better. It requires superhuman patience, social skills; and the ability to look cool and collected, even as the ship sinks. Above all, a person has to be able to put up with titanic amounts of stupidy, both in front of and behind the counter; and kiss insane amounts of underqualified, egotistical ass.
The irony being, that anyone who can do all of that, would make an excellent social worker. Or therapist. Or psychologist. Or entrepeneur, owning their own business. Or any number of much better paying professions.
So I'll tell you what I've told a dozen managers: This place doesn't deserve you; and you sure as hell don't deserve this. You could do SO much better.

Thank you. That's the worth I know I have.

Apologies for the typos. Autocorrect seems to have abandoned me. That's what I get for calling it "stupid" so many times.
