MISSING! in At the foot of the hill

Got a call from a friend Monday morning, just as I was arriving at the appointed place for bridge club. He said our mutual friend, a charter member of our senior club who suffers from dementia and lives in the same senior community that I do, had gone missing. His wife had awakened at 4:30 a.m. to discover that he was gone.
Bob and I had noticed a lot of activity around the lake and throughout the campus and knew something was up. Lots of people out walking around. Police cars creeping along…even on the walking path around the lake.
I had asked a couple of people to text me if there was any news, but heard nothing until I got home mid-afternoon. When I got off the elevator a couple of the staff were taking a break in our common sitting room. I knew they would know so I asked.
Happily, the poor old fellow had been found…but not until around 10:30…wandering around near a restaurant across the lake. He was, of course, totally confused, cold (only wearing pj’s), dehydrated, and very, very tired. The area had been searched, re-searched, and searched again. Where he spent that intervening six hours or more, God only knows.
He was taken to the hospital for evaluation and released later the same day. Guess they gave him some kind of homing device in case he gets the hungeries in the middle of the night again and goes off hunting before dawn.
All’s well that ends well.
Thank you God.
