Mask Chic in Everyday Ramblings

I took this last year in early July. Right now the whole area is burning. It just breaks my heart. The fire has even jumped the Columbia River and is burning in Washington. Thanks climate change. The undeniable event that has consequences for us all…

Like for instance the ability to breathe comfortably.

Although we have an air quality alert out now the air was the worst I have ever seen in my life here yesterday. It was literally raining fine particles of ash. I went out to go to the grocery at noon and as I stepped out the door, I was like wait minute…this is a bad idea.

I went back and got a bandana and held it up to my mouth and nose until I got home or was on the bus or in the store. When I was coming back I saw a young woman wearing hers bandit style and I am like, oh yeah, that is my style.

So later in the day, slogging through the heat and dry thick heavy air I wore a bandana bandit style to walk down to the dental school to get my teeth cleaned.

I thought about taking a car, hiring one, even though it seems ridiculous but the air was very bad. I started to see all sorts of creative use of scarves and various forms of masks out and about.

My teeth were stained once again by the antiseptic rinse they had me use for the recent surgery and my hygienist did a fabulous job of getting them clean, and then in my goodie bag she slipped a mask.

It feels devastating that this particular area is burning. Everybody who hikes here hikes there.

But never underestimate the power of a creative group of people to make something stylish out of a bad bad situation.

I know everyone is focused on Texas and Louisiana and Puerto Rico and South Florida but spare a thought for us too.

Chic as we are.
